OUE QLKE TIIE CH MADE Favorite Sons of the Late General Eckert Will Make Contest of Will.
DOCUMENT CUT THEM OFF ECKERT WAS FORMERLY PRESIDENT OF THE WESTERN UNION TELEGRAPH COMPANY LEFT A LARGE ESTATE. New York, Nov. 4. The exact lines upon which it Is said a contest of the f3.000.000 will of the late Gen. Thomas Thompson Kckert, former head of the 'Western Union Telegraph company, will be brought by his son. J. Clendenrln Eckert, who was cut off with $50,fOO, were learned today. They are as fellows: First, that the will was framed. If not drawn up In Its entirety, by Richard Gregory Page, who for yeara was General Eckert's secretary, and who s'nee the general's jeath laa been employed by Thomas T. Eckert. Jr., the son. who wc left about 2.900.000. Second, that the will was brought to the general In his dying days by Attorney Thomas C. Ennever, whom the general did not know and never had seen before the day tho will was Binned. Mr. Ennever Is also named as a witness to the testament. Third. T. T. Eckert, Jr., and Miss Mlnnlo Etan, a former ma!d in t'.ie Waldorf Astoria, but latterly hotis keeper at Elberson, were tho closest attendants upon General Eckert during the days just before he died and that he. Secretary Parge and his wife were the closest to General Eckert at the very moment of his death. J. Clendennln Eckert was present it the death, but was not very cordially received by his brother and by his father's amanuensis, according to the further testimony that will be received.' Fourth, that not only was General Eckert under "undue Influence" when he signed his last Testament, but that also his son, T. T. Eckert, Jr., who was profited most from It. was conducting himself In peculiar fashions. Altogether t!i contest of the Eckert will promises to bring forth some of the liveliest testimony that has been heard In recent years In a case where a great fortune was at stake. Doubtless In the contest there will rise the question of religious differences. It will be shown that General Eckert's second wife, who died some nine years ago, was a Catholic and wished him to become one. But he did not during his life. Then It "will be testified that Miss Minnie Egan, the Waldorf maid, waa brought Into the household as housekeeper by T. T. Eckert, Jr. Soon after that time. It will be contended not only the general, but his son Thomas, who la now favored withi ... . . .. . . . . . .. i most oi m estate, joinea me watnouc church. Mlaa Egan Is a Catholic. Clendennln. the son, who Is cut off with only $50,000, la and always has been a Protestant. But the big point of the contest will be the question: Why did General ' Eckert. who waa abvlously fond of his brother William, cut him off with a pittance of 15,000. and why did he practically disinherit his son Clendennln by giving him only $10,000, while T. T., Jr., got almost $3,000,000. T. T. Eckert, Jr., still said laat night that he had not married Miss Egan, his housekeeper, but would do so as soon as he had time and opportunity to get to New York. AT THE GENNETT, At Local Theaters "The House Next Door." J. E. Dodson, who in the "House Next Door," presents one of the few charcter pictures which are going to take permanent place in stage annals and whose fine art shows blm to be the thinker and student, as well as the , actor, has evidently closely observed American dramatic conditions for he says: , "The art of the English actor is more finished, but that of the American actor la more virile. America la yet a young country, big in every way, reaching out to develop vast resources still In process of formation, and rushing and hurrying along in Its expanding energy. iWls at a time as the history . of all nations show us, when youth Is passing and the period of intense Industrial activity Is over that art finds Its time of development. There must be in a nation a large class of wealth and leisure with time and money to devote-to art, and still there are abundant signs that the public want the best In art. There may not be the cultivation that there la in older countries but there la aa much popular appreciation. The public here Is quick to grasp what Is really good. I'After all actors cannot be made. Wealth, Intellect, study, experience all fail to make the great actor unless the vital spark Is there, something that cannot be comprehended or explained, only felt. Hard work and determination may develop a high de gree of ability, but there human effort stops. The actor, like the poet, must be born, not made." Mr. Dodson will be seen In "The House Next Door" at the Gennett on Friday, November 11. La Porte Stock Company. This Is to be a special night of the Mae LaPorte company's engagement at the Oennett theatetr this week. Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall will be the bill and dainty souvenirs of Dorothy Vernon perfume are to be given away to each lady on the lower floor. Miss LaPorte la a charming little actreaa and her performance la one of the big events of the entire company for each member aeems to take a special delight In watching Mae as they call her give her wonderfully sweet little portrayal of the winsome Dorothy. With special cos tumes from Philadelphia and scenery from the' Tlffen studios the whole production will be thoroughly enjoyed by all those who have the good opportunity of seeing it . Mrs. Flake.' The wide spread interest which has been aroused In Richmond by the announcement of the coming engage. ment of Mrs. Fiske and the Manhat tan company In "Becky Sharp," waa unmistakably .manifested at the box office of the theater at the opening of the aeat sale this morning. The public's desire to pay tribute to America's foremost dramatic artist aeems to ment the Gennett haa had for a long time. No role In which Mrs. Fiske haa ever appeared has been so distinctly and . unapproachably her own aa Becky Sharp," and the wealth of art istic detail In which hervvisuallxation of the Immortal Becky abounds haa made It one of the American stage ,gurea which will never be forgotten. Her appearance here on Saturday, November 12 will be a big society vent Arcade. The fine, picture of the ChicagoPhiladelphia championship series brought extraordinarily heavy business Thursday. All the fans were there to see their favorite players in action. The film waa perfect in every respect and pleased the crowd. The management was fortunate In holding the picture over another day so that they will be run again Friday, together with a new feature dramatic subject. MEII BEK WASTED America's Mechanical Primacy Being Overshadowed by Dangers to Life.
WILL HOLD AN EXPOSITION (Palladium Special) New York. Nov. 4. Fifty per cent of the accidents in American industry are preventable, is the claim of the American Museum of Safety. In proof of this, it has just opened a permanent exposition of safety devices in the Engineering . Societies' Building, New York, to show how the dangerous parts of machines and processes may be protected, so as to save the lives and limbs of the workmen. It thus becomes a clearing house for every worthy device and every worthy thought concerning safety. It is its purpose to place this new museum idea on the highest plane, namely the realization of the greatest ideal regarding conservation the conservation of human life. . The exposition consists of machines in actual operation, models and photoFr?rfcs cf safety devices for circular saws and planers; presses and grindns machines; safety exit doors and fre escapes; respirators and helmets for supplying pure air; elevators, sr.fety lamps, and containers for gasoline and other volatile liquids; textiles, the building trades, transportation, quarrying, the chemical industries and wood-working contain theiij appropriate safeguards. ' "I'm in trouble," said a pale and worried employer who c'alled at the museum. 'Tve just lost one of my best workmen, through an accident on our circular saw. The wood kicked, throwing him forward on the saw, which cut him so badly that he lived only a few minutes. What can you show me in the way of a safety device?' Such problems as this arise every day in industrial life and clearly prove the necessity and value of a clearing house of practical : informa tion; where employers and workmen alike may go for advice and practical help. . - Try This For Catarrh Get a HYOMEI (pronounce it High-o-me) outfit today. BACK HOMEJO VOTE President, Cabinet Ministers, Bureau Chiefs and Clerks Are to Migrate.
GREAT INTEREST IS TAKEN American Nwi Service) Washington, D. C, Nov. 4. Although denied t'ae right of local suffrage Washington, because of the presence of the national government, takes the greatest interest in the outcome of the state and congressional elctions next week. The president, the members of his cabinet, heads of departments and clerks are going home to vote. Judging from tlie dally attendance at the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic campaign committees and number of voters who will leave the capital to exercise the right of suffrage in the various States next Tuesday will break all records. The railroads are offering a reduced rate for voters of one and one-half fare for round-trip tickets. Practically every official and clerk In Washington halting from New York or Ohio is preparing to go home to vote, which is regarded as an indication of the import ance which attaches to the contests in I those two states and also the general I feeling that the results are likely to be close. No visitors were present at General Boulanger's tomb In the cemetery at Ixelles xon Friday, the anniversary of the general's reath. Alone, a gardener who is charged with the upkeep of the monument placed In the name of the Comite de Souvenir three wreaths upon the grave of Mme. de Bonnemaine's friend. And that was all.
