The strike difficulty which has spread from Jersey City to New York caused a riot near the American Express company's stable today.' A strike breaker was dragged from his wagon and badly beaten. A policeman who came to his rescue was also pummeled by the crowd. When the police rescued another strike breaker they .were stoned but managed to save their man. TO DASH FOR POLE (American News Service) Christchurch, N. Z.,' Oct. 28. The ! British Antarctic expedition headed by Capt. Scott arrived here today on board the exploration ship Terre Nova. All on board were well. The 10,000 mile voyage Into the Antarctic will be continued from here and members of tho expedition stated that they hoped to arrive at the South pole some time in December, 1911. There are 55 men aboard the Terre Nova. Lieut. E. R. Evans, second in command, declared that there is no possible chance for failure as this is the best equipped exploration party ever sent out. ' DOUMA WAS GUARDED (American Newa Service. St. Petersburg, Russia. Oct. 2S. Troops were on guard at the opening of the fourth session (the winter session) of the Russian Douma today to preserve order. A stormy meeting was anticipated because of opposition to the proposal to honor the memory of Prof. Serge Mouromtseff, who, at one time, was president of the lower house. Soldiers were" stationed not only about the building, but inside to quell disturbances. The present session will be one. of the most important in the history of the Douma owing to the big program of uplifting legislaHEAR' ORINOCO CASE (American New Service) ' The Hague. Oct 28. Following the preliminary exchange of briefs last month the internation court of arbitration met today to begin the hearing of arguments in the Orinoco claims case, in dispute between the United States and Venezuela. The claim is that of the Orinoco Steamship Company, an American corporation against the Venezuelan overnmt-nt for more than $1,400,000 for the alleged, arbitrary destruction of certain exclusive privileges by tho government of former President Castro. The claim was originally submitted to the AmericanVenezuelan mixed, commission in 1903, which tribunal awarded the company about I2S.000 damages. The question for the international court to decide is whether the award of the mixed commission Is valid, and if. It is not. to what sum the claimants are entitled. Some Gossip Gathered From The Gay A merican Metropolis

New York, Oct 28. Unlike the leopard, Fifth avenue is changing its spots. It is no longer a man's avenue, nor an avenue for men, in the- sense of commercial and professional tenure. Counting from Twentieth street to Fifty-second street, which is essentially the northern business terminal at present of the seven hundred firms doing business there, fully three hun-. dred are conducted by women for women. Two hundred are carried on by firms consisting of men and women whose ' stock comprises women's goods; one hundred are owned by men whose patrons are mainly women purchasers of" feminine attire. Of the six hundred feminine supply houses in question, at least one-half are engaged in the sale of laces and linens of Irish, Scotch, American, Oxford, -Egyptian, Turkish and Belgian manufacture; tne remainder being devoted to stocks of miscellaneous goods, jewelry, antiques, human hair, etc., while many are engaged in conducting tea shops and dyeing shops, and . manicuring parlors. The largest hotel in the vicinity, the Waldorf-Astoria, makes a feature of catering to women, at least ten of New York's fifty-two women's clubs meeting there. There women c'aily lounge in the famous Turkish room; sip tea in the odd nooks and corners devoted to lunching and dining and dazzle the famous "Peacock Alley" with their gorgeous frocks and their Jewels worth a rajah's ransom. Effeminized Fifth avenue Is the proper name for it The latest recruit to the avenue is a female auto-driver, or "chauffeure88" costumed , in spotless white linen, over which a jaunty "fem000,000 loan of the Chinese govern ment from an American group of bankers has been consummated. It was announced today that the prince regent bad ratified it- The members of the financial group are J. P. Morgan & Co., Kuhn, Loeb & Co., the National City bank and the First National bank, all of New York. CONVENTION STARTS (American News Service) Toronto, Oct 2S. Two thousand delegates representing almost every portion of the United States and Canada, filled Massey hall today at the opening of the thirty-seventh international convention of the Young Men's Christian association. The initial session, devoted " mostly to the exchange of greetings, was marked by a display of great enthusiasm. Business sessions interspersed with features of entertainment will keep the delegates busy during the netx three days. An international athletic meet and demonstration of physical work will be held tomorrow afternoon and on Sunday a notable program of religious exercises will be carried ut :
