It was then decided to place the entire establishment under service and leave the customs Inspectors in charge of it for the night , Duveen surrendered the keys of the safe and desks and was taken to the federal building. He asked permission to send a wireless message to his brother, Henry J. Duveen, aboard the Lusitanla, which arrived at dock late last night The request was granted. When the prisoner was taken before United States Commissioner Shields, District Attorney Wise said the. case was the most Important one the government had thus far had to deal with in connection with importation frauds. the same firm paid $129,000 for "Rockets and Bluellghts." by J. M. W. Turner. While waiting for the ball bond to be made out Benjamin Duveen said he knew nothing about the importation of the vases alleged to have been under-valued. At Local Theaters Pavlowa. The universal recognition accorded Mme. Anna Pavlowa and M. Michael Mordkin, greatest of Russian dancers Is emphasized by the following editorial published In the Chicago RecordHerald of July 25, under the caption, Russian Ballet as an Adjunct to Opera: "Whether the vast plans on foot for the coming opera season through a chain of American cities will make for success, remains to be seen. Subscribers, the chief support of such enterprises, often show themselves capricious and blase. Society always reaches sometime the point where straight opera has to be reinforced by ballet Get a dance feature sufficiently novel and striking, an opera stands to win. Happily, there is Russia, the delights of whose magnificent choreography the world has begun to taste. Pavlowa and Mordkin of the Metropolitan last season, turned many a mediocre occasion Into a success and became in the end the feature of the season." Pavlowa and Mordkin return to the Metropolitan Opera company this season for six weeks and in addition will tour America for twenty weeks with a supporting ensemble of sixty in pro ductions aptly termed "ocular opera." This big organization will be seen in Richmond on October 28 when the Gennett will present it as the feature attraction of the season. Grahams Stock Co. The Grahame Stock company which is playing at the Gennett theater presented the best bill which has been seen here so far last night when "The Resurrection" was given to an appreciative audience. The company through out deserve especial mention for each person rendered the roles entrusted to their care with a carefulness which was truly remarkable. But above every one else, Miss Lillian Dean as Marslova gave a characterization of the Russian peasant woman which was a gem in its way. From the first act when the light hearted girl dances around the May Pole to the later scenes when she is incarcerated in the prison in Siberia and meets face to face the man who has brought her to that level Miss Dean left nothing to be desired. Ferdinand Grahame as usual gave a finished and well sustained portrayal of the man who has risen to the heights of power and wealth while the woman he has betrayed has fallen to the other extreme. His acting in the scene when he discovers that the woman on trial for her life before a Jury of which he is foreman is the same that he left in the country years before was realistic in the extreme.
