STEEL 110 Wife Murderer Saws Through Iron Doors in Mass. Penitentiary and Escapes. FOG COVERS HIS TRAIL Beaver, Pa., Oct.ll. By quietly sawing his way through three steel doors and scaling a 22-foot - gate, Charles Hickman, convicted of wife murder, escaped from the Beaver county jail early today, and swallowed by a dense I fog, left no trail. The jail breaking Is believed to I I . i . in l a wave uvluiicu auuut x 017 utim: u u I it was not discovered until about 7:30 when a trusty, distributing breakfasts, found that the form curled up in Hick man's cell was a dummy. Hickman had occupied cell No. 1., on the first floor of the jail. He sawed six thick bars of steel from around the small opening in his cell door and crawled through to the corridor, only to find his way blocked by double steel doors at the rear of the jail. He sawed through a heavy steel lock of the inner door, and through a big padlock on the outside door. With a stick tied to the end of a rope, made from his cell blanket, he caught the top pickets of the big iron gate in the jail yard and lulled himself op and with aa much ease let him self down on the outside. This tackle he left hanging to the gate and made off in the fog. Sheriff John W. Hartzell and his deputies worked all day on the case, but found no clew. One of the 28 prisoners in the jail admitted that be heard a man in the jail yard whispering, as though with, some confederate outside. The Jail officials have nothing to say as to their theory how Hickman obtained his saf. His 16-year old son has been a frequent visitor at the jail but it is not understood that the lad Is suspected of complicity. The po lice in all parts of the state have been notified of Hickman's escape. WAS INVADED By SCRAPPY SENATOR (Continued from Page One.) the wet vote. The republican candi date for the legislature from Clark county is a young man who is a machinist in the American Car and Foun dry shops, the largest Industrial industrial concern in this county. He is very popular among his fellow em ployes, which number about 1.600. He is also acceptable o the wets. The republican candidate for legislative from Floyd county is also an employe at the car shops and he is wet. That both are acceptable to the wets is further proven by the fact the repub lican county chairman in Floyd coun ty was the chairman of the wet or-j ganization in Floyd county when itj went 1,800 wet, and his coat is off for ' Weissenger, the republican nominee. in Floyd county and he is co-operating with the Clark county organization to elect Gustave Thro, the Clark county candidate. Both Thro and Weissenger are Germans, which is a point in their favor in this community and Thro is a Catholic, which is not being used, but which will undoubtedly lend him some additional strength in a county where there is a large Catholic popu lation. Thro New at the Game. Thro Is a new m?.n to the game but Weissenger is not Weissenger is running against M. C. Thornton, author of the bill to repeal the cities and towns law. Thornton has served two terms in the legislature and is asking for a third one. In his first race Weissenger was his opponent and Thornton won by the narrow margin of 64. Last year he was the beneficiary of the landslide, but Weissenger was not his opponent. This year with conditions more nearly normal the republicans believe they can cut the ground from under" Thornton and put Weissenger in. The democratic contention that the standpatters will knife the ticket is offset by the fact that Jonice Monyhan is deeply interested in carrying this election and he is more or lees resnonsible for the outcome here. He has promised to see to it that the old guard behaves. He was one of them, but he has experienced a change of heart regarding Beveridge and now he concedes that Beveridge is the strength of the whole fight. Monyhan was very much in evidence at the two meetings Monday and not a little of their success was due to his work. The contention of the republicans that Beveridge is going to get lots of democratic support was given the color of truth by the presence of scores of democrats at both his meetings Monday. They came early and remained for the finish, something unusual in this democratic community. : People Vs. interests. Both Beveridge and Fred Landis ln tneir speeches emphasized the fact that this year it is not a party issue so much as an issue squarely drawn between the people and the interests. Both of them received applause for their sentiments. "The issue of this campaign," said Weak Stomachs Cause Waste -23 When the stomach falls to get all the nutriment out of the food we eat. there occurs an unnecessary waste. and waste always causes weakness. The final results are. the whole physical beinir is affected, the nerves become starved and enfeebled, the blood watery and poisoned, the heart arrows weak and unstrung, the kidneys and bowels sluggish and clogged up. and a general breakdown is only a matter of time, and usually a very short time. WHAT IS V1N0L? It Represents Twenty Years' Work of Two Eminent Chemists. After twenty years of study two eminent French chemists discovered a method by which the alkaloids or medicinal elements of the cod s liver might be separated from the useless oil or grease, retaining all the good of cod liver oil and dispensing with the bad, as the oil has no medicinal value. These medicinal elements blended with tonic iron and a mild medicinal winemake Vinol. Vinol is not a secret medicine, as its ingredients are printed on every bottle, and in all cases where the healing, strengthening influence of cod liver oil is needed, Vinol will give better results, for it contains all the curative medicinal properties of cod liver oil, but without the oil, and it is easily assimilated and acceptable to the weakest stomach. For all run-down, weakened conditions, and to cure chronic coughs, colds and bronchial troubles, Vinol is unexcelled. We sell it always with the understanding that if it does not do all we claim for it, we will refund tho money paid us for it. Leo. H. Fine, Druggist,, Richmond, Ind.
Landis, "is whether Indiana is able to tell her own friends. Senator Bev eridge comes to you in this campaign standing not on prejudice but on his honest record as an honest man, appealing to honest men. There cannot be any greater disaster in a free government than the punishment of a man in public life because he has been honest with his constituents, honest with his country and honest with himself. We have been crying for honest men in public life, now that we have one, shall we rebuke hlrar In describing the growth of insurgency Landis said it was the outcropping of a principle "bigger than a party, deeper than expediency, which is fighting the battles." Both of the meetings were largely attended. The meeting in the afternoon at Jeffersonville was held In the Knights of Pythias armory and before its close the hall was filled. The meeting at New Albany was held in the public square because of the lack of any building large enough to hold the crowds. A large number of politicians of both parties came from Louisville to hear Senator Beveridge. Late Monday afternoon, through the efforts of Jonice Monyhan an extra meeting was arranged for Tuesday, Instead of goiug directly from New Albany to Orleans, the senator and his party will stop at Salem Tuesday morning and after a half hour's talk there by the senator the party will be driven overland in autos to Orleans.
