A Few Suggestions About Floor Coverings
tm . BMitacBOir aajn or nil owe
much of their gloom to the dusty, di
lapidated appearance of . the average
home after being closed for the sum
mer, or after being wide open to the ravages of sun and dust. To return
from viewing the gorgeous tints of
autumnal splendor to gaze upon faded
wallpaper and rugs that seem sudden
It threadbare and dull. Is not an ex
hilarating experience. With the fall
renovating comes many furnishing re
qulrements. . Particular attention is given to the floor-coverings at this time of year. Perhaps some of the
older rugs have been used for porch service, which will necessitate consid
erable changing about and no doubt
mean the re-carpeting of some room
Never have artistic effects in rugs,
and carpets been so well within thej means of the moderato purse. For the living room the range of price and material is great from the Orientals
and their most satisfactory velvet imi
tations to the durable fiber rugs of striking design and grateful colorings. While the Wilton rugs and the slightly cheaper Axmlnster, which are always In great demand are being shown In many new patterns, the popularity of the cheaper rug Is Increasing, particularly for dining room and bed room use. A Scotch weave rug. called the Kilmarnock will be found to be among the most durable as well as attractive and reasonable rugs on the market They have the look 61 the old Gobelin tapestries with designs that range from elaborate embossed effects, that further emphasise the resemblance, to
the plain-centered,
dered designs that are so well In keep
ing with the wall papers and draperies now In use. One particularly pleasing design waa an adaptation of the Tudor rose Idea carried out in moss green and a dull blue. Another rug of this style waa in warm shades of brown with a flash of orange that made it seem especially suitable for the library with Its leather tomes or the dining room with Its copper. Navajo effects are much liked for the den. Fiber rugs on account of their great variety of colors, their price, and the ease with which they may be cleaned are superseding all other fabrics for bed room use. Then too it is possible
to carry oat - more successfully the color scheme of a bed room with these rugs since they are made in all the more delicate shades, so hard to And in velvet rugs.' A suggestion from a dealer In regard to mending any sort of "fiber rug or 'matting Is worth remembering. Instead of using thread which is likely to look' unsightly, get a little raffia which may be bought in almost any color, and Is much stronger than even the coarsest thread. Another idea which may be of value is to use bran instead of soap when washing rugs of this description. The bran may be tied in a cheesecloth bag and
after being dipped In warm water should be rubbed vigorously on the rug. The rug should then be rinsed with a cloth wrung from warm salt water. The attractive rag rugs, in plain coiors with neat white stripes across the ends, are to be. found in size 24x48. suitable for the bath room, for a dollar and a dollar and' a half. The venerable rag rug has been driven from the kitchen by the sanitary linoleum ta the tiled floor of the bath room and! now it is rapidly being made to lend' Its quaint effectiveness to the bed room.
Novel Way to Decorate the Table
No mechanical achievement has ever opened up such unexplored realms of artistic possibilities. In every field, as the attainment of flight, i The Influence has already filtered down through to such humble arts as hairdressing and wall-papering and tabletrimming. Clever conceptions for table decoration, that suggest aerial pleasures and voyages, are being carried out in various particularly charming fashions. At a. recent dinner given for a bride and groom who were supposed to be about to navigate the "Seventh Heaven," the central point of interest was a large toy aeroplane, which had been

planes and at the wheel sat a tiny wax Cupid. Narrow satin ribbons were strung from this wheel to each place and tied to the place cards.
These were in the form of large white
butterfly wings, splashed with gold., and so bent that the wings seemed
poised for flight la the center of the table was a low bowl of white roses and bridal wreath, with here and there a golden butterfly hovering. If one does not happen to be handy at such things, instead of the- white
wings with their touches of gold one may get a roll of the crepe paper
which is covered with gorgeous butter
flies of all sizes and colors. By cutting these out and pasting on cards,
one may. have most attractive place

1HEN you fail to use sound judgment in
buying, and your "bargain" furniture goes
to pieces in a year or so, YOU HAVE ONLY
YOURSELF TO BLAME .
Furniture properly constructed will last for generations, losing none of its stability or beauty. It rarely costs much more, some-
times even LESS, than the most worthless,
glued together kind, and is worth many times as much. Yet there is a demand for "cheap" furniture, and if you are deceived; you ; DECEIVE YOURSELF, At Grothaus' you'll find furniture worth having, which you can buy at just a trifle above the actual cost.
