The ease or Mrs. Edna Klmmel Bonslett vs. the Ntw York Life Insurance company, which has occupied tlie attention of the courts for ten years and has come to ho known as the strangest insuranca cote on record, was called for trial today lu the United Sta? circuit court. The ca3e Involves an inurance policy of $23,000 which George Klmrr.fcl. at one time a well known resident of N'iles, Mich., and later cannier of a bank in Arkansas City, Kae., curried with the New York company. lu 1S9S, shortly after taking out the Insurance policy In favor of his sitter. Mrs. Edna K. Bonslett. Klmmel disappeared from Arkansas City. Detectives followed him to Kansas City, hut no further trace of him was found until 1908, when Andrew J. White, an Inmate of a New York asylum for the criminal Insane, declared himself to lie Klmmel. This man was later pronounced sane and transferred from the Matteawan asylum to the state prison at Auburn. Made a Deposition. The convict made a deposition con- . at sting of over 700 typewritten pages throughout which he endeavored to Identify himself as Klmmel. His explanation of his disappearance was that a relative waa Implicated In the embezzlement of $100,000 from the Pacific Express company, and that he had damaging evidence against him. He declared the relative and others caused him to be drugged and kept a prisoner In St. Louis. When he made his escape he met his relative on the street, waa knocked senseless by him

trouble and wsi sent to prison. Mrs. Bonslett brought suit to recover the insurance on her brother's life. The St. Lrtls courts declared him dead, but the United States circuit cor rt of appeals declared the evi
dence Insufficient and the judgment against tbe" insurance company was reversed. Since the first trial ' the convict White was unearthed and the Insurance company la now' resisting payment on the ground that he la the real Klmmel. A number of Michigan and Kansas people who had known Klmmel Intimately were taken to Matteawan to see the convict and while some were convicted that he was the missing man, others, including Kimmel's mother and sister, declare that the convict is an imposter.

London, Sept. 20. The steamer Balmoral Castle was commissioned at Southampton today to take the Duke and Duchess of Sonnaught to South Africa for the opening of the first united parliament. Tie vessel, which will be escorted by the cruiser Defence, will sail for Cape Town on October 10.

Sir Walter Parratt and Herr von Hoist played in turn upon the piano such music as was asked for. This went on for some time until at last the chessboard was brought out. Sir Walter then proposed to play two men at chess in consultation, still remaining at the piano and playing from memory what was demanded either, from Bach, Beethoven. Mozart. Chopin or Mendelssohn. It is rumored the purpose of the organization is to make demand for better wages and. shorter hourand to strike if the demand be rejected. Leonora O'Reilly. Rose Schneiderman and Pauline Neemun. organizers for the league, are working up the corset makers' union. Thousands of girls are employed in the trade. The plan is to enroll all of them in the movement. Mass meetings will be held, at which the grievances of the girls will be aired.
