GOTin GOSSIPS HI SAY REID INTEODS f 0 QUIT Out These Wall Street Mongers Have Long Deen Having Indiana Man Out of the , Rock Island. HAS MADE FINANCIERS SIT UP AND NOTICE "Uncle" John Morrissey, Just Before His Death, Said He Thought "Danny" Longed for Home Folks. .'
New York, Sept. 12. Wall street baa been throwing out hlnta for the last ten days to the effect that Daniel G. Held la to resign from the directorate of the Rock Island railway company. M. Held now la In Europe from which country he la to return the latter part of thla month. Mr. Reed has beea since his tin plate days, most strenuously and deeplly interested in Rock Island In a financial way. Some are saying that he will be compelled to hand In hla resignation as a director. Those who know Wall street rumor mongers are aware that they hare long been doing to Dan Reld almost everything on the calendar, except getting hla bank roll. And that fattens with each passing year. Those who have been taught object lessons In their financial fighting with Mr. Reld. when afterward siting up their bank rolls, invariably hare discovered that Reld had copped most of the roll, and what each and every one had to content himself with was experience. Any man who could come to New York and aingle handed finance himself, control and own what Mr. Reld does in railroads, banka, financial trust companies, and In all the other corporations, without any assistance whatever from Wall street, must be good on figures, brains, besides a fighter and yet a diplomat. Longs For Richmond. . "Uncle" John Morrissey of Indianapolis, who financially aided Reld when be was struggling to make a aucceaa of the tin plate project, died not long ago. Shortly before hla death ho remarked to a friend: "I wonder If Danny wouldn't like to be back homo la Indiana. Yachta and Bttsopo, awell country and city homes may sound big down hero in New York, but I know Danny, an' a way ' down- In bis heart I believe that he longs for bis old home and the old byes what's lift UV thlm in Richmond. "The power uv wealth Is great, but It canj buy happiness and contentment any better In New York or Paris than it can out home. "Will Danny give up the fight fn New York for control of tho Rock la-
land road and go back to Richmond,
ye ask. Not, me bucco, till the Pear-
soa-Farquhar-Kuhn-Loeb and the oth
er lntereata give him everything he
asks for. They're a tough crowd to buck against sure, but Danny can be tougbt too, an' Danny la mighty good
on big flggera.
"Besides that fcS cornea of ' Irish stock on hla mother'a aide, an' he'a a
born fighter by nature, that lad. But while he is a fighter, he la also a diplo
mat by Instinct"
Mr. Raid. Leeds and the Moore brothers came to New York to live la 100, In order to be on the battle ground and to meet In the open or in closed warfare the glanta of finance.
The battle waged fast, furious and bit
ter for a time.
First it waa J. V. forgaa, then the late B. H. Harrlman, and down the lino all along. 'But Dan Reld la atill
on deck and ahows no scars. Many a scalp hangs up in the mem' orles of Dan Reld. He made the Stan
dard OH crowd. Mr. Morgan, and even
Mr. Harrlman alt up and take notice.
A Tip From Rogers.
On one occasion H. H. Rogers, on
his own yacht, the Kanawha, the fastest afloat at that time, waa returning
' from the last International yacht race.
John M. Archbold asked him who owned the yacht Reclalre. which was
showing the Kanawha its heels. Mr.
Rogers was chatting with Mark Twain and looked up surprised to see baa fast yacht being passed so easily by
the Reclalre.
"John." said Mr. Rogers thoughtfully, "that is a beautiful yact. very
trim and fast. It Is owned by Daniel
G. Reid Tinplate Reld. Keep your
eye on him, John, he's far the smart
est and shrewdest of the Rock Island
crowd."
Mr. Roger's siting up of Mr. Reld
. was repeated afterward to the Indl-
ana man's friend by a gentleman in the Rogers party at that time. Time
baa proved that H. H. Rogers, who
was a tne Judge of men, was right
Of the. original four. Raid. Leeda and the Moore brothers, but two are
now oa the firing line, Reid and
Judge Moore. And now Wall street
is trying to prove it that the former
Is to be forced back from alt position
la the lead of the fclnsa of finance.
As the lata If. It. Rogers remarked
oa that yacht of hla, unbeatable until
' the Reclalre passed it oa the high at
"keep your eyo oa Daniel Orey Reld."

Figure in Big New York Graft Probe
Louis BedelL at ton. former Assem
blyman of -the state of New York; State Senator Agnew, of New York on lower left; next him former Assistant District Attorney Kresel; and on the lower right, former Lieut-Governor, M. Linn Bruce; all of whom are figuring Just now in one of the most re
markable graft probing crusades ever conducted by the state of New York, or any state for that matter. For several years Bedell was chairman of the Railroad Committee of the Assembly.
He acknowledges having had S24.0OO plsced to his credit by railroad lobbyists with a broker firm. He declares
was not a bribe, but only because
the railroad sympathized with him because he was poor and they thought
might insure them "fair treatment."
The probe committee was voted at the
last session of the legislature, and after it gets through with individuals past and present of the legislature, is
scheduled to tackle Wall Street.

CONFUSION
Every High School Student to
Have Work Assigned Before the Opening.
THIS IS A RADICAL CHANGE
Every high school student will have
his classes arranged and his desk as
signed In the" new school 'building
when he or she returns to school next
Monday morning. . Principal I. E. Neff and John F. Thompson started to work this morning in the superintendent's office of the new high school
and the students that had been asked to come this' morning and arrange
their work for the ensuing year, were given all the necessary - Instruction and assignments for the opening of the high school next Monday.
By registering snd deciding what
classes they will enter the students and faculty will be relieved of much of the trouble incident of the first day of each term. Formerly the several hundred students came to the school the opening day and amid confusion ar
ranged their studies. This year the
confusion will be done away with and
each student will more easily select his work. About one week ago Principal Neff sent letters to all the students who were expected to enter the high school and requested them to come to the superintendent's office at a certain hour this week. It Is expected thst over five hundred students will receive assignments this week.
