(American News Service.) New York, Sept 10. After Coney Island bad been running wide open all summer, with crime. Immorality and gambling in full awing and, apparently under the protection of the police, the acting mayor of New York, being In control of city affairs during the absence of Mayor Gaynor, "discovered" the appalling state of affairs at that famous beach resort and ordered the lid clamped down good and hard. In view of the fact that this order came when the season at Coney is practically closed, it has caused some amusement among the citizens. Conditions In Coney l6land have always been fairly bad, considerably more so than at other beach resorts along the Atlantic coast, but if the statements of numerous investigators and a large number of victims can be credited, the state of things during the summer just ended, was worse than eVer before. There were more dives, more crooks and thugs and more lewd women In Coney this summer than ever before and It seems that all of them did a thriving business. All through the summer complaints from victims who bad been robbed at Coney came pouring In at police headquarters, but nothing was done In abatement. Not until after the season was closed did

the authorities "higher up" discover

that the lid was wide open and 'that It was necessary to put a stop to the activity of the criminal element in that popular resort Acting Mayor Mitchcl did not order the police to make an

investigation, but sent out a number of city employes for that purpose. The result was a thorough shake-up In the police department which -is responsible for the lawlessness at Coney. The closing of the depots established by Nathan Straus In this city, for the sale and distribution of pasteurised milk for the use of infants is a great blow to thousands of poor families In the over-crowded tenement districts of Manhattan and v. Brooklyn. When these milk depots were established a few years ago, Mr. Straus was acclaimed as a benefactor of the poor, especially of the babies of the poor. The milk was sold at a nominal price and was given away to those who had not the means to pay for it ' The milk trust and all assertions to the

contrary notwithstanding, there is

really such a trust did not approve of

Mr. Straus's charity, because it en

abled the poor to obtain good milk for

little or nothing Instead of being com

pelled to pay an exorbitant price for poor milk to the trust By a peculiar coincidence a few doctors made the

discovery that pasteurized milk was

Injurious to Infants at least they

said that such Is the case. Backed by the trust an agitation against pasteurised milk was started which became so strong, that Mr. Straus decided to close his milk depots. . It Is expected that this step will lead to a tremendous Increase In the mortality of . Infants in the tenement districts.

but that will not worry the milk trust

in the least so long as It can squeeze a few more dollars out of the consumers.

Some persons have rather peculiar

notions of what constitutes a Joke. The

other day the first morning mall

brought a letter to one of the daily newspapers, in which the writer, the wife of a well-to-do physician in this city, informed the editor that she in

tended to commit suicide and that her husband was in no way to blame for her act An investigation was made which established the fact that the signer of the letter and her husband

had sailed the day before on a steam

er bound for Germany. Relatives of the woman were communicated with

and as they are wealthy they commun

icated with the purser of the liner by wireless. In due time a reply by wire

less came from the purser, stating that the women In question, according to her own statement had written the

letter as' a joke and some "unknown

party" had mailed It "by mistake.' What a grewsome brand of a joke!

The Lamps of the Sea. Many kinds of jellyfish are phosphorescent at night and present a wonderfully beautiful appearance when slowly moving through the water, and It is this phosphorescence which has given them the poetic title of "the lamps of the sea." They are not less beautiful in the daytime, for most of the species are striped or tinted, some being melon shaped, with rows of fringes dividing the sections. The tentacles are often plumed, and. while waving about in graceful curves.

The blood relatives of "Sheriff ' Bob" Chanler. the artist-clubman, by telegraph determined today on a family conference at the Chanler mansion at Red Hook In Dutches county, tomorrow, to devise plans that will force Mme. Lina Cavaleri Chanler, "Bob's wife, to disgorge the estate of $1,000,000 she secured from him. This scheme was arranged by Sydney Harris, personal counsel to the prima donna's husband. He went "to Chanler's studio at 27 East Forty-fifth street today and bad a long talk with his client. The upshot of it was that both left for Red Hook. At the Chanler (Dutchess county) home, "Bob will meet his brothers, former Lieutenant , Governor Lewis Stuyvesant Chanler, and Wlnthroh Chanler, and his sister, Mrs. Richard Aldrich. at Galazanna. A young child, the son of a local blacksmith, had been miss

amination revealed that, the corpse

was bloodless. Further inquiries led to the arrest of a merchant named Dom Salvarrey, who was last seen with the child. He said to have confessed that he kill the child to drink his blood. In explanation he declared th-tt he was a sufferer from pulmonary phthysi and was advised by a gipsy to cure himself in this manner, which she assured him had already given good results in the case of other suffers from the same malady. It, is surmised that the outrage is due to mental derangement. However, this is not the first case that has been registered of similar atrocities.
