Famous Rulers of Nations Remembered By Their Pictures Appearing on Stamps

Xing Edward King Peter King Carlos Baltimore, Md., Sept 6. Following close upon the decision of the AustraHungarlan monarchy to incorporate the study of postage stamps in the public school work educational authoritles elsewhere, including some in this country have taken the matter up for series consideration. Some teachers In America have already begun to "teach the young idea how to shoot'' with the aid of the stamp, and there Is every prospect that the little mail carrier will before long be a 'potent factor In the educational systems everywhere. The action of the Austra-Hungarlan Board of Education was prompted after a careful investigation of the stamp as a medium of instruction. The matter was gone into with exquisite care and the net result was the promulgation of an order that every school reading book should contain at least one chapter devoted to the postage stamps of the world. Illustrated by facsimile reproductions. It was learned that almost every field of study is covered to some extent by stamps, or that the study of them leads the scholar through a pleasing and entertaining method to extensive fields of valuable Information that would otherwise have to be approached by more presaic and arduous paths. Geography, history, literature, mythology, theology, natural history, world politics, science and the fine arts, astronomy and other branches of learning are opened up to the student of the postage stamp with a facility and readiness that Is surprising. Leonard H. Goldsmith, an Instructor of note, declares he has for years successfully employed postage stamps as an aid in teaching his classes. He contends that asldo from the "book learning" the student acquires in his application to stamps there is exerted a wonderful influence In characterbuilding through the necessity of exercising care and neatness In stamp study. It Is interesting to know that there Is a little book of stories based on postage stamps the reference Index to which shows that no less than a thousand historical facts and personages are told of in Its pages almost an encyclopedia of useful Information. There are many special groups of stamps that have special lessons to teach and there are countries where stamps tell with interesting vividness their history. There are sets of stamps, too, Issued for commemorative purposes that drive home some of the most entertaining stories that are to be found in all history. The Columbian series of stamps issued by this government bring out the whole story of the discovery of AmerFall Styles Now If you want

Prince of Wales Pres. Castro ica and the progress of the nations particularly our own that now populate this continent. The Louisiana Purchase stamps tell of that most important epoch in the country's life. The Hudson-Fulton stamps of very recent date are alve with the story of discovery and Invention that is indissolably linked with the names of Robert Fulton and Henry Hudson. Canada's history may be read in the two series of stamps issued within the last few years commemorative of the deeds of John Gabet and of Champlain and Cartler. The vissitudes of the South African Republic are graphically told by the several issues of stamps during the period in which the Boers were struggling against the inevitably overpowering odds that Britain possessed against them. The perfecting of the Panama canal plans and the birth of the Panama government are set forth in stamp issues. The story of the Black Napoleon of Hayti and the building of his practically impregnable fortress of Sans Souci, a narrative with which probably few are familiar, is told in a series of stamps. The tyrannical cruelty of this ruler was never excelled by his most barbarous rival. The field of athletics is covered in a number of stamps, notably the Olympian games series that have been issued by Greece. - Methology with a large number of its prominent gods and goddesses is illustrated by stamps of Creto and Greece. Switzerland has a stamp that tells the story of William Tell, showing Tell's son armed with the famous crossbow and carrying the apple presumably the very one that he held on his trembling pate when the illustrious crossbowman spit it with an arrow. There is a stamp issue that presents a whole series of scenes from the quaint story of Don Quixete. It was ONE SCHOOL OPENED The parochial school of St. Andrews' church opened Tuesday morning with an attendance of 300. The enrollment Is larger than ever before. There are stamps showing elephant hunts in the Congo, and there are othors showing dragon beat regattas on the river Min in China. Stamps illustrating the progress of methods of navigating the seas are numerous and there are many which show advances made in the mechanical sciences. It is little wonder that the schools find the postal carrier ready and popular means of instructing the young. ICE MEETING The Hague, , Sept 6. CRIPPEII TRIAL IS 0(1 Charge Against Miss Le Neve Reduced by Order of the Court Today.
CHARGE OF PROSECUTOR (American News Service.) London. September 6. The charge against Ethel Clare LeXeve, co-defendant with Dr. H. H. Crippen. was today reduced to that of being an accessory after the fact. This was announced when the hearing of the pair was resumed, in the Bow Street Police Court. When arrested she was accused of being an accomplice. Prosecutor Travers Humphreys, who made the announcement, also for the first time gave out the case of the prosecution, declared that the exam ination of the remains of Belle Elmore (Mrs. Crippen) showed that there had been a criminal operation on the victim which the chemical analysis revealed large quantities of hyescin, one of the most powerful drugs known. A few days before the death of Belle Elmore,' her husband bought five grains of hyescin, enough to kill 40 persons. All night long crowds surrounded Bow Street Police Court, to get a glimpse of the prisoners when they were taken in today for the continued hearing before Magistrate De Rutzen. At dawn the throng increased, and by the time the principals in the most enthralling mystery of a decade were hurried into the building, flanked and led by guards, fully 10,000 people were crowded about the court and on the adjacent streets. Life or Air Ltau Away. Air seems to spoil easily. Air traveling through shafts snd special air chambers In fact, air going through anything that cuts it , off from tbe ocean of atmosphere loses some of its indescribable vitalizing qualities and is liable to cause weariness and a feeling of depression to those who habitually breathe in artificially ventilated houses. Scientific examination may show such air absolutely pure, but all the same it Is poor stuff to take into the lungs. This also explains the real rock bottom difference between town and country air. Highly artificial food and nighty artificial air. no matter bow good they seem, are uot the real stuffs themselves. New Yrk Press.
