IDESS SECRETLY WEDS AJJFE GUARD Family Will Attempt to Annul ' the Marriage of Miss Helen O'Brien. TRY TO BUY BRIDEGROOM
COUPLE WERE MADE ONE BY A t 4APTI8T MINISTER IN AVON, N. Y, WHILE GIRL'S MOTHER WAS MOTOR I NO. Spring Lake. N. J., Sept. 6. Miss Helen O'Brien, who, on graduating from a 8t Louis convent school on her eighteenth birthday two months ago, came into possession of $1,000,000, willed to her by her father, a railroad man of St. Louis, helped her mother, Mrs. Rosa O'Brien, settle the question of a Summer boarding place by championing the Jersey coast in general, and this place in particular. It also happened that John Howland, formerly a drummer for a Philadelphia firm, whom she met In St. Louis two years ago, is a life guard at the same place. Mrs. O'Brien accompanied by her daughter and the girl's guardian, H. D. Montgomery, a St. Louis lawyer, came here in the middle of July, and e ngaged the Audenreid Cottage, one of the finest of the seashore residences here. They took ally auto rides along the Rumson Road, and dally dips In the seae. But the girl seemed vastly to prefer the seashore dips to the auto rides, and spent most of her time on the beach. The youpng life guard, being contcientous regarding his duty pent most of his time upon the same beach. In fact," the two spent most of their . time on the same part of the same beach. Neither Mrs. O'Brien nor the girl's guardian was aware of the fact that Miss O'Brien had met Howland before, bowever and the frequency with which the tall, sun-browned life guard and the tail sun-tanned brunette were seen together was not noticed. Friday afternoon Miss O'Brien suggested an auto ride on the Rumson Road, Inviting Montgomery and her daughter to accompany her. The lawyer agreed, but the girl, at the last moment, recalled an engagement and ran to the seashore, saying that she would return to the house presently and accompany them. When the time for the automobile ride came, however, the girl had not returned, and Mrs. O'Brien and Mr. Montgomery went without her. When Mrs. O'Brien and Mr. Montgomery returned from their drive they were met by Miss O'Brien, whom they questioned as to ber failure to keep ber appointment The girl replied that she bad been nowhere In particular, but her heightened color, bowing through the seashore tan. and her embarrassment of tone and manner, aroused vague suspicions. When Montgomery took the girl aside and questioned her more closely, she confessed that she had stolen away with Howland and they bad been married. They went first, she said, to the Rev. Father Thomas J. Lyon, rector of St. Catherine's Roman Catholic church and asked him to perform the ceremony, but he refused, because, while Miss O'Brien is a Catholic Howland is a Protestant Next the girl aid, they went to Avon, N. J., where the Rev. Thomas Taylor; a Baptist clergyman, performed the certmony, bis wife and a servant being witnesses. They then returned to Spring Lake, the brodegroom going to his station on the beach and the bride to her home. Miss O'Brien has not been seen on the beach or elsewhere since ber confession. Neither Mrs. O'Brien nor Montgomery would talk about the marriage. Howland, bowever. said that Montgomery had sent word that steps would be taken to have the marriage annulled. In tne Good Old Days. At the Murray. Large audiences were present yes terday to witness the first perform ances of the vaudeville at the Murray, which this week opens for the season. Preparing for the better protection of the residents of Baton and vicinity against the possible depredations of thieves during the Prebye county fair. Sheriff W. S. Bonuer, has secured a pair of e xtra fine bloodhounds for use next week. The dogs are owned by John Kelly, of West Alexandria, and are noted for their man-hunting capabilities. Always the people have suffered at the hands of house-breakers during the fair and Sheriff Boner Is determined to overhaul the offenders this year. Nothing Is too small for the attention of the Pasteur institute In Paris, provided it Is In any way connected with Infection. It appears that the canary suffers from a sort of marsh fever, communicated to it by an Insect known as the codex. Dr. Roux, the head of the Institute, has told the Academy of Science that the bacilus of this fever has been Isolated and a serum made to inoculate other canaries. Canaries vaccinated with this serum proved comparatively immune against the attacks of the codex, while nonlnoculated birds suffered severely when attacked. The Lesser Evil. She There's baby crying. HATS. IN FAVOR AMONG THE SELECT
TIIE CORXUCOriA AND THE TURBAN, two OF THE SMARTEST STYLES. HERE are two of the very, very latest and very, very "chlcest" of the French millinery styles. One is an oriental turban, with all that that name implies iu the possibility of setting off charmingly many sliapos and kinds of facet. The example shown is made of crin, and It may be reproduced in black or color, as the wearer elects. It is trimmckl with a great big bird, the color varying with the shade of the crin used for the hat. Many white turbans are seen where the fashionable folk congregate. In that case the bird 'is, of course, black, following the craze for black and wblte effects that has seized both Europe and America in its tight and seem Ingly permanent clasp. The other hat is of a modified cornucopia or "horn of plenty" shape. It la made of straw and bears for trimming only a single rosette Among the ultra smart women those who "go in" for motoring and other sports th. cornucopia shape has proved very popular, and it bids fair to remain in favor for soma time FRANCES WARD.
A DETECTIVE Ey JOSEPH By JOSEPH RENAND. "I have read most of these modern detective stories that are so popular," said the o!d Judge. "Both criminals and detectives in them are wonderfully clever, but still I think I can tell a story that beats them all, but that is cot very flattering to myself. "I was quite young, and had been made prefect of police in a department near Paris, and had been quite successful from the start. A gang of burglars, who .did not shrink from murder, were infesting the neighborhood. They called tbemselves "the invincibles." In less than six months I broke up the gang, and had all the leaders sent to prison for long terms and when this was done I went to Paris for a much needed rest "One morning I received the following letter written In a big firm hand: . " 'Our group still exists and we command you under penalty cf death to pay over to us tho sum of 50,000 francs. If you are wise you will signify your willingness by tying a white handkerchief to the hook outside your window. "The Invlncibles." "I laughed. It was evidently a joke of some comrade. But two days later when I was returning home rather late something crashed against the wall near me and exploded. I saw two shadows disappear among the trees. I struck a match and saw that a bullet had struck the wall quite near me. Among my letters the next morning I found one written in pencil: "First warning. "The Invlncibles." "Two days later a little after having had my breakfast coffee I was seized with a violent attack of pain that lasted until night and an examination showed that some milk -I had drunk contained a mixture of arsenic and an emetic. The next morning this letter arrived: "Second and last warning; we might Increase the dose. "The Invlncibles." "It was not possible. Was I a police official or a creature of Conan Doyle's imagination? And still that shot! This milk bought In the creamery on the corner and served by the old valet who had known me since I was a boy. I admit I lost my wits. I can hardly describe the terror that seized me. It was like the anguish of a prisoner In his cell waiting to be executed. "Still I succeeded in controlling my feelings. They were not to Intimidate me. They had tackled the wrong man. and I would triumph over this gang once more. I carried a loaded revolver and everything. I ate was carefully examined. I even took the precaution to write my bank not to pay any check signed by me, so that even If they forced me to sign one by torture it would not be honored. "When I returned from my usual walk I bad an Idea. On the first floor in the bouse where I lived I bad noticed a doorplate with the inscription: Dick Nortrand, Private Detective. I had seen advertisements In the paper announcing this man's wonderful successful work. Why should not I engage him to watch over me. A dignified valet led me into Monsieur Nortrand's office where I met a calm, selfpossessed bald-headed gentleman, who listened very attentively to my tale. " This seems, to be a very serious affair, judge. These scoundrels are evidently trying to revenge their comrades. They want your money, but are even more anxious to take your life. I bare already had several similar cases. My price, if successful, will
A Short Story REN AND be one-tenth of what these people demand. It is not too much when you remember the risk I run. You accept! All right. Tomorrow morning you will display a handkerchief as if you were willing to pay and then you will disappear for 20 hours. I will make up exactly like you and ut on your usual suit of clothes, while you will disguise yourself as a workingman, and leave the house by the back stairs. I will go out for a walk, the fellows will undoubtedly tackle me and feel sorry for their mistake." "I went upstairs to put out the signal and tell my" valet that I should be away for a few days, and a little later Dick Nortrand had become my double and I a burly workingman. " 'Now if you will take my advise, said my protector, 'you will go to the country. I know just the place for you. At Ville d'Avroy, number six Rue Dames-Marie, there is a family boarding house, run by a Madam Raporte, to whom I have often sent people in similar cases. She will make you comfortable, and you will wait there until you hear from me, . which will not be very long I assure you." "Mme. Laporte, a beautiful brunette, had just accompanied an English family to the railroad station when I arrived at her house, so I was to be her only boarder she said. My room, which was large and comfortable, commanded a beautiful view of the Seine. She lent me a dressing gown and I immediately felt at home. "Our first dinner was fit for the gods, and Mme. Laporte was charming. Well, I was young! The champagne was excellent and I have an idea that at the desert I became very attentive to the beautiful woman, who sat next to me, but that is only a vague memory. "I woke up thirty-six hours later oh the same divan feeling terribly 111. The house was empty and the doors locked. I opened a window and a passerby assisted me to get out A doctor to whom I went said I showed every sign of having had a good dose of knockout drops, and police investigations proved that the house had been rented furnished a few days before by Mme. Laporte, who had never had any other boarders. "The truth dawned upon me. I rushed to my bank where the cashier told me that I had called In person the day before and had withdrawn all my cash and securities. He showed me the signature on the receipt which were good enough to deceive myself. "Dick Bertrand was never seen again, and for several years I had to live rery economically, but even today I think with regret of the charming Mme. Laporte's beautiful eyes." Lwck. HANGS III BALANCE Michigan Votes Today Wheth er to Return Standpatter to the Senate. ; r HAS AN ABLE OPPONENT NEXT TO SENATORIAL FIGHT, CONTEST FOR REPUBLICAN GUBERNATORIAL NOMINATION AT TRACTS ATTENTION. Tf (American News Service.) Lansing, Mich., Sept 6. A statewide primary election is in progress throughout Michigan today for the nomination of candidates for governor and other state officers, representatives in congress and members of a legislature which will choose a United States senator. Senator Julius C. Burrows and Congressman Charles E. Townsend are rival candidates for United States senator. Their names appear on the eRpublican primary ballot and both have agreed that the one receiving the largest vote shall be the choice of the Republican legislators of the state for election. The contest between Burrows and Townsend for the senatorship has been one of the most spirited fights of its kind that Michigan has seen In years. Both have stumped the state from end to end. Mr. Townsend is known as a progressive Republican, while Mr. Burrows is known as a conservative. Both of the candidates are willing to be known as friends of President Taft. No democratic aspirant for the senatorship has entered the pri mary, but the name of W. A. Taylor, of Battle Creek, appears on the bal lot as the choice of the Prohibitionists to succeed Senator Burrows. Fight for Governor. Next to the senatorship fight the Republican contest for the gubernatorial nomination is attracting most at tention. The three candidates for this honor as Chase S. Osborn. Patrick. H. Kelley, the present lieutenant-gover nor, and Amos S. Musselman, of Grand Rapids. The prevailing belief appears to be that either Osborn or Kelley will receive the nomination. The Democratic nominee will be Lawton T. Hemans, who was the candidate two years ago and made n excellent showing against Governor Warner. F. W, Corbett, of Lansing, and Joseph Warnock, of Harbor Springs, will head the Prohibition and Socialist tickets, re spectively. Congressman Denby, of the First district, Hamilton of the Fourth, Smith of the Sixth, McLaughlin of the Ninth, and Dodds of the Eleventh are unopposed for renomination. Henry C. Smith and W. W. Wedemeyer are fighting for the Republican nomination in the Second district, now represent ed by Congressman Townsend. In the Third district Congressman Gardner has a bard fight on his hands, and the same condition prevails in the Fifth district, where Mayor Ellis, of Grand Rapids, is opposing Congressman Diek ema. In the Seventh district Con gressman McMorran has a fight on his hands, but is likely to win out. Con gressman Fordney of the Eighth dis trict and Loud of the Tenth, though they have opposition, are expected to be renominated. Congressman Young, of the Twelfth district has a harder fight on his hands and the result is doubtful. People v. w;.. o Ext Spiders. WILL IMPROVE HIGHWAYS At the third annualXational Good Roads Convention,' to be held In St. Louis Sept. 28 to 30. there will be discussed the ways and means of provid ing the necessary funds for the general improvement of highways throughout the country. The consensus of opinion seems to be that in the construction of the main, travel highways, or trunk lines, the expense of such work should be born In part by Federal appropriations and State appropriations. Up to the present time no Federal appropriations have been made for roads construction, although a bureau is maintained which furnishes advice and tests road materials. This bureau is under the direction of Logan Waller Page at Washinton, D. C, and has been of the greatest value In stimulating interest in the good roads movement throughout the Union. "The best results on trunk lines heretofore," states George C. Diehl, Chairman of the National Convention Committee, "have been obtained through large State appropriations In the form of State aid to counties and towns. It has been suggested that the extension of the State aid system to several States Invarious parts of the country, and the appointment of a State Highway Commission In every State, which will systematically and economically expend highway moneys, will result. In the near future, in large Federal appropriations, for such Feder al appropriations will not be apportioned and sent to the several States unless such States have the organiza
