Committing "sbinju. as lovers' suicides are called lu Japan. Is sucb au ordinary occurrence that little attention Is attracted by It. but this tragedy was followed by something exceptional In Japan. Wben the two bodies, still bound together, were washed ashore the officials who examined them turned them over to their respective parents. Tbe villagers were so deeply affected that they railed upon the two bereaved families to "do Justice" to tbe boy and girl by uniting them in marriage after death. Tbe mayor of tbe village was especially Insistent that tbe rites be- performed, "su that tbe deceased might be safely united in the next world. (American Sw ServiConcord. N. H., SepL 5. The aeW direct primary law passed by the last legislature will be tried for the first time in New Hampshire tomorrow. Unusual interest has been aroused by the contest because New Hampshire Is the first eastern state to extend the primary plan to Include the nomina tion ot gubernatorial candidates. There are two candidates for the Republican nomination for ' governor. Robert P. Bass, of Peterboro. and Col. Bertram E. Ellis, of Keene, The former is the choice of the progressives, ; and has been indorsed by many political leaders. Including former United States Senator William E. Chandler. Winston Churchill and others. Colonel Ellis is regarded as the candidate of the old-line Republicans with machine affiliations. Mrs. Mari!la M. Rieker. of Dover, sought to go upon the official ballot as a candidate for governor, but the attorney-general ruled that she was not eligible, Clarence E. Carr, of Andover. Is the only candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor. He was tbe Democratic candidate two years ago, and succeeded in reducing the Republican majority to the lowest figure on record. Because of the split in the Republican ranks the Democrats feel much encouraged and some even venture the prediction that they will eleoi the next governor.
