Wealthy Men Undermine the Church, Gotham Pastor Says
BY FRANCIS PHIttlPS. New York, 'Aug. 26. "Men ; of wealth," says the Rev. Dr. Andrew F. Underhill, pastor of the fashionable church of the Ascension, "are undermining the - church and driving the poor and middle classes away from if ' Though the average house of worsnip in xew xors: is more attractive than it ever was, providing finer music, abler sermons and more pleasant surroundings than at any time in its history, it lacks the spiritual atmosphere of old, says this dominie. Work men no longer visit and the middle i class shun it. Why? Because the ; Rev. Dr. Underhill is speaking the ! rich men who bear the brunt of its ! financial support have ceased to comraand the respect of others. Kncwl-1 edge of the private lives of this class : their moral turpitude and venalitymakes the poor man feel that the church that harbors them must be a ; place of impiety, instead of the house ; of God. The average rich man fancies i that once he bar drawn his check for j the church, his obligation ends. He seems to feel that the spiritual injunction to lead an' upright life does not apply to him. " "The business and social conduct of the members of the churches is throwing suspicion on the church Itself, says Dr. Underhill, "and . aside from this a large percentage of the Clergy contribute their, share to this lack of trust ' The life led by the majority of men who hold the chief offices does not convey the ideal of Christian example, an until it cvoeswewill have the empty pews. "Observing the lives led by church members, the' man, in the street reflects: 'If this is an example of Christianity, then Chlrstianity cannot make me any better than I am.' He stays away, and the result you see growing every day." In the recent enrollment In American colleges of students from Persia, Japan, China and Turkey, the effete east the aeat of the world's most ancient civilisation pays an eloquent compliment to the culture of the western world. Wu Ting Fang, former Chinese ambassador to the United States, one of the ablest diplomats in the Chinese empire who matriculated at one of the great New England universities, and his wife, a graduate of Vassar college, are fair samples of the results achieved, as is the case of the present Japanese ambassador to Washington, who is likewise an alumnus of a Yankee institution. Encouraged -by the experiences of these countries,, Persia now perceives it to be to its advantage to have some of its young nobles trained in western ways. The scions of three of her oldest' families - reached here the other day to enter American colleges. In the plan to have one of them go through one of the great agricultural colleges of the nation Is discerned a determination on the part of the Shah's government to replace the primitive farming methods still obtaining in Persia with modern methods of tilling the soil. Of the other students one is to learn surgery, while still another will take up the science of political economy as understood from the viewpoint of the Occident. PLAN HOME COMING A home ' coming will be held at Doddridge Chapel Saturday and Sunday. AH former district superintendents, pastors and members and former members of Doddridge church are expected to attend the services. There will be a public dinner each day. - - At 10:30 Saturday morning the Rev. John Machlan will preach and following the dinner at noon church reminiscences will be given, led by the Rev. A- N- Marlatt The Rev. W. F. Smith will preach at 3 o'clock. Services Sunday will be conducted by the Rev. Virgil W. Tevis, Rev. C. H- Plnnlek and the Rev. J. H, Doddridge. Clayton .
