NERVY BROOKLYN WOMAN PUTS A BUAGLAR TO FLIGHT JERSEY MOSQUITO CROP IS LARGE THIS SEASON.
(Palladium Hperlal, . .ew York, Aug. 20. The practice of tarring and feathering objectionable persona, at one time a favorite and popular amusement In all sections of the United State baa lost a great deal of its popularity. It has practically fallen into disuse in civilIsed communities and only in the wildest and woollest sections of the west and south It has survived to some extent The recent revival of this form of lynching In the state of New Jersey does not speak well for tne progress of civilization in the rural sections of that state. A married man, .who was accused of paying too much attention to a young widow in bis neighborhood was treated to a coat of tar and feathera by a gang of young rustics who call them
selves the "Terrible Ten," The report does not state whether the eejf-
constituted guardians of rural vlrtuo were unsuccessful aspirants for the favor of the young widow, but it is quite likely, as she Is said to be the owner of a fine farm. It Is a fortunate thing for a great many men In New York and other cities that the tarring
and feathering sport is no longer
practiced In well regulated, civilized
communities. The prices of tar and feathers would surely rise to a tremendous height. , Many Pish Stories.
Since the beginning of the fishing season quite a number of choice fish
stories have found room In the col
umns of the dally papers, but even the best of them were amateurish compared with the story which was
rent In by a correspondent at Nlagar geon, weighing 150 pounds leaped
Into a motor boat cruising two miles
above the Falls, and in thraelng about with Its tall Injured two of the occupants of the boat and disabled, the engine so that the boat helplessly
drifted toward the Falls. It would
have gone over the Falls had not some men In another motor boat
heard the cries for help and come to the assistance - of' the disabled craft. The originator of that story deserves a star position on the staff
of New York's yellowest paper. A Nsrvy Woman.
i If there were more women like
many burglars would abandon their profession aa too risky. The other night she was awakened by a noise
'in her room. When ahe opened her
eyes she saw a burglar ransacking
the drawers of her bureaus Most women would have screamed, but ' not
so Mrs. Morgan. Stealthily she left
her bed, grasped a convenient hickory cudgel and with it fiercely attacked
the burglar, who was not prepared
for such a turn of things. He tried to escape, but Mrs. Morgan followed
In close pursuit, although only In her nightgown. The burglar reached the
street, while the irate lady continued
to beat him over the head and shoul
ders with the heavy sticky When the barglar saw a policeman, he ran to
him for protection and begged him to
arrest the woman with the stick.
When the woman explained the situation, the burglar was taken to the station and locked up. Big Mosquito Crop

which makes up In fierceness what
St lacks In size. Mosquito nets afford
no protection tnis year, as ue mosqultoes are so small they can crawl
through the meshes. In South Orange the Sunday services had to be dis
continued for the season because the mosqultos. In spite of the screens on doors and windows, had taken pos
session of the church and seriously interfered with the devotion of the
congregation. . Refused Admission.
A man suffering from an attack of
heart disease was refused admission to a hospital three times the other day because the doctors considered
him In so serious a condition that
they were afraid he would die In the
hospital. The attitude of the doctors Is so absurd that it would fit a farce comedy were It not of so serious a nature. Heretofore the general publie has been under the Impression that hospitals were Intended, for the
care of sick persons Irrespective of the seriousness of their condition, but
It seems that this was erroneous Idea.
Judging from the attitude of the doc
tors It would seem that hospitals are
