Only a Street Boy"

By E. NULLENHOFF

, Yes It was true, most decidedly had Dick missed his vocation. He waa a street-boy,' and street-boys have the reputation of being happy-go-lucky, clever and aharp; he poaaeased none of these aualltlea. When ordered to pick up the coal a dropped on the harbor, he fell Into easing at the glittering water and the waving flags; In consequence hla basket generally re

mained empty. Dirtying bla fingera, rummaging In the gutters and In the

dustmen's palla waa distasteful to

him. Never by any chance, while prowling about the street, did be a light upon a copper, a damaged orange, or any such treasurers, aa did his burly friend Hob. who, like himself lived In

the back regions of the house. There

fore, on account of hla Inferiority in this respect he waa looked down upo i by hla companions, and whenever he tried to compete with them, aa for in

stance, by hanging on behind the water-carts and enjoying a short ride,

Be waa invariably caught by the coachtaan'a lash, while the others ran

laughingly away. He waa an unlucky little fellow, though he himself scarce

ly realised It

Today sitting on the doorstep with

the sun gleaming on hla little, thlu, bare legs, gazing at the clouda flylns over the housetops, he felt at peace with all the world.. These few hours of the day, when hla father was on the wharf and his older brothers and sisters at school, were the most enjoyable in the whole day. pick waa only five yeara old and the youngest, but had already begun doing bottle washing for the landlord

or i no outer viae 01 mo street, ug in this way earn a few pence. But after Ms having once fainted and been carried home aa a result of bad air and long standing, his mother had put la

a word for him, and he was allowed to atay at home. "He waa her favorite, because some times, when work was over and ahe waa standing knitting stockings In the court yard, he would rub his small, fair head against her or stroke her workworn bands, which none of the other children ever dreamt of doing. How the1 wind blew today. Paper bags and atrawa whirled round the gutters, the curls flew about the girl's facea and the goldsmith at the corner - had to hold on his hat with both hands And the clouds! When passing the aun their rims were touohed with gold; for a moment a strip of sky became visible, then another cloud came up and all together rolled over the big warehouse. ' Dont stare like that, but give me a hand," aald an annoyed voice In hla ear. The little street boy was so startled that he had to recall hla thoughts before recognising the flshwoman who had her stall at the bottom of the narrow strset. The wind had torn off her neckerchief, and it waa whirling Ilka a brown ball half-way down the street. He rushed after it and caught it as It waa on the point o

being blown Into a big pool; turning round to hand it back, he met a softer glanoe from the weather-beaten, old face.

' "You are at least good for some

thing.' said the flshwoman. "Now help me carry these baskets." He did as he was told, picked them up, staggering under their weight and helped her to put up the stall. The exertion made him hot, but at last all was ready. "Here is something for yourself,

said the woman giving him a bloater

still warm from the- recent smoking. It fairly took away Dick's breatft.

A whole undamaged bloater entirely

to himself. He could hardly realize his riches as he nursed his treasure on the doorstep. How fat It was, and so golden, shading off to rich brown

on the back. He passed a loving finger over It, but the color still re

mained. "What a beauty ! he said, and turn

ed It from one side to the other, even

licking It, but only near the tail.

What would his mother say? She,

too, had but little opportunity of tast lng such delicacies.

The poor little dreamer had lost all count of the world. Including the

school just opposite, in which his special enemies were inclosed. In bis delight he failed to hear the schoolbell, and unexpectedly he found himself surrounded by big and small tormentors. "Just look at that fish." Where did he get It from? Out with It! It Is just lunch time!" echoed around him from all sides. Dick put his hand with the prec

ious treasurer behind his back. "It Is my fish," he cried, trying to look firm. "Pooh! Yours? Rubbish! Give it up!" cried shock-headed Philip- pushing him so that he' and his treasure both fell into the scuffling mess. How they pushed and kicked and yelled. They took off their shoes and bantred each other on their heads.

They tore one another's coats and made their noses bleed. - The poor bloater was thrown about in the tumult; first minus head then minus tall, It was finally trodden underfoot "Dash the lot of you!" said a passerby crossing to the other side. The police had other things to think about and had probably done just the same In their youth. Heads were poked out from various basement windows to watch the fun, when, fortunately the school bell rang, putting an end to the wild confusion. Some odd buttons, torn leaves and an old bookstrap alone remained on the battlefield and in the gutter lay the bloater, now unrecognisable and long since forgotten as the object of their quarrel. , ' ' .

Dick alone looked back at It, brush

ed a few tears from his eyes, glancing first at his lost treasure and then at

the flshwoman, who however reamin-

ed unmoved. "It serves you right," she said. "You

are no worse off now than you were before." '.,- j He reseated himself on the doorstep

rubbed the bruises on his legs, and

once more gazed thoughtfully at the clouds.. Evidently the flshwoman was right Oh, if we could all be as wise as the flshwoman.

(American News Srvlcl Chicago, Aug. 20. Congressman James R. Mann, of the Second district was brought forward today as the probable choice of the regular republicans to succeed Joseph G. Cannon as speaker of the house of representatives. It was announced from authoritative sources that the republicans not only will throw Cannon overboard but will back some congressman for his place who has no embarrassing tariff affiliations. Mann voted against the tariff on account of the wood pulp duty. Furthermore, he is credited with having stood Aldrich on his head in joint committee and obtaining the adoption of President Taft's ideas in respect to the commerce court Officials at the republican national headquarters practically admitted that Mann was slated for the place of speaker.
