Montgomery, Ala., Aug. 18.Tbe most notable gathering of progressive tarmers ever held in this state assembled in the capital today for the annual convention of the Alabama Farmer's Union. Plans for extending the membership and influence of the union and for a closer cooperation of the farmers in handling and marketing their products will form the chief topics of discussion at the three days session. ELKS picnic The annual outing of the Elks lodge at Jackson park tomorrow will be attended by the majority of the members and their families. HEBE IS A MYSTERY A report came to police headquarters this morning that a man had fallen off of the Pennsylvania railroad bridge. Patrolman Vogelsong who investigated found James Duke within a square of the bridge badly intoxicated but without a scratch on his body. He was the only man in the vicinity but the police say it would be impossible to fall from the bridge Without being hurt, unless he rolled down the big embankment at the went end. Duke was too drunk to know where he had been. FIGHT PROHIBITUM Umtvlean News Service Minneapolis, Minn., Aug. 18. The prohibition question is one of the principal matters to bs discussed at the annual convention of the Northwestern Hotel Men's Association, which has begun a three day's session in Minneapolis. The majority of the members are said to be opposed to the "dry" movement on (he ground that the hotels, especially those of the expensive elass, cannot be profitably maintained with prohibition in force. Pouring a quart of gasoline into tbo cistern at 133 South Fifteenth street and throwing in a lighted match, tha resulting explosion this noon brought more than a hundred and fifty peopl to the scene. - Robert, the twelve year old son of Henry Hieger, the well known plumber and Alvin Fox, aged eleven, determined to see what would happen if they poured gasoline into the cistern and throw in a lighted match. The suggestion had no more than been made when the two started on its execution. The iron lid to the cistern was blown several feet the erown, of the cistern broken and the cement, lining fractured in many places. The buildings in this neighborhood were rocked by the force of the explosion. No one was injured, but it is said the two youngsters were escorted to a nearby woodshed by irau parents. '
