Mack, chairman of the National Democratic Committee, who is one of the "accidental" visitors at Mackinac Island, where W. J. Conners of Buffalo; Justice W. R. Day; Charles W. ' Fairbanks and Speaker Cannon are also staying. All are stopping at the same hotel and are frequently seen in each other's company. All denied that an important conference had taken place. Speaker Cannon said that he did not go to the Island for any political conference and stated that his staying at the same hotel where the other prominent visitors are stopping was merely'Incidental. HE ALMOST GOT US A fine of $100 and costs was given James Maher, in police court this morning, for drunk. "Jim" was arrested Saturday at the Palladium office, where be .was creating a disturbance and .threatening because of a story he alleged had been written concerning him. Patrol Driver White made the arrest but Maher broke away and ran several squares. He was captured and Mr. White sat on him until the patrol arrived. There were four previous convictions against Maher. He had been out of jail only a few days In the last several months. "Jim" goes down now until after New Years Day. YANKEE YACHT WINS. (American News Service.) Cowes, Aug. 8. The Westward. American yacht today won the royal Victoria yacht club's international trophy over a forty-eight mile course defeating-Lip ton's Shamrock.

WANT THEIR MONEY Indians Willing to Give Up Land to Get Their Dues While Living. CONFIDENCE IN M'MURRAY (American News Service) McAlester, Okla., Aug. 8. A special congressional investigation into tlie alleged bribery attempt in connection witn the Indian land sales was resumed here today. W. G. Holtman. an Indian citizen, testified that himself and Indians generally were ready to pay the twenty-five percent of all land due them in order to get immediate settlements so that they could get their money while they are living rather than leave uncertain bequests to their descendants. Holtman said the Indians had been forced to pay for all the money tney formerly got and had confidence in McMurray's influence to get it for them. STRUCK BY A TRAIN Wayne County Man Run Down Today While He Was Crossing Track. HE IS FATALLY INJURED (Palladium Special) Hagerstown, Ind., Aug. 8. William Burg, living just east of Hagerstown, was struck by the Westbound Pennsylvania train about noon today and fatally injured. He was riding in a small buggy filled with milk cans. The horse was killed, the buggy demolished and milk scattered In all directions. Burk was hurled a short distance and injured about the head. His skull is believed to have been fractured. Hammond, Ind., Aug. 8. Her clothing saturated with blazing gasoline, Mrs. Thomas Johansen rushed to a nearby creek, but found it dry. She perished before neighbors could assist her.
