Bombita the famous Spanish matadore who had' been counted upon to lend clamor to the coming centennial celebration of Mexico's Independence, has refused to fight in the Mexico City corrida for the princely salary offered him. Antonio Fuentes, another celebrity of the bull ring, ith about twelve others of the best matadores, has' signed on, but owln to his exorbitant demands it will not be possible to have him give more than a few performances. An entertainment which will prove of the greatest interest to the many visitors which will throng the capital during the festival, is the Basque-jai-alai or pelota. The best players have been secured for this snort, among them Navarette, Edea and Alberd'. Jai-alal is enjoyed principally by those who do not care for m- sanguinary exhibitions of the bull arena. PEEVED AT POLITICIANS (American News Service) New York, Aug. 3. Resentful of the treatment accorded them by the two political machines of the city and by the genus homo generally, the suffragettes this week, threatened to make, things hot for candidates this fall. The private, life of every . man nominated Is to be studiously investigated, and if there is the least blemish discernible the fruits of the investigation are to be made public to the disparagement of the gentleman in question and the party that stands sponsor for his nomination. "We'll show them something In practical politics that will make their hair curl." said Mary Coleman, one of the leading advocates of women's rights, the other evening at an open air meeting of her clan. "We have been treated shamefully and we ar now going to do a little wholesome education to show voters the sort of men tbe parties are in the habit of offering for their franchise the seamy, rancid side of the candidates they ask you to vote for year after year. We've had enough of your bad eggs In high places. If we must have men. let's have the decent kind." Whereat the two organizations foresee interesting developments in the campaign. In their search for honest. virtuous men for public office, the suffragettes say they will outdo Diog enes.
