PREPARE NEW DIRECTORY A new directory will be issued by the Richmond Home Telephone Co., in about two weeks, containing names of 2,975 subscribers, an increase of several hundred over the old directory. According to William Bailey, superintendent of the company, there has nev er been such a demand for telephones as at the present time. Until a few days ago no phones had been placed by the company for a period of over six weeks, because the central exchange was working to its fullest capacity. New equipment to the value of $2,; 000 has been installed by the company, which will be able to meet all demands of its patrons. Five new switch boards have ust been built in the central exchange which increase the capacity of central 500 telephones. There are now thirty-five workmen employed, a number of which are installing new telephones. The party line system In the city has been much improved. Formerly on the two-party lines system whenever either member of the line was called both phones rang'. Under tho improved system . each phone has a different call and only the phone called rings. It was intended to get out the new directory several months ago but the equipment" of the company was found to not be sufficient to meet the demands of the service so it was necessary to install new switchboards and party line equipment . During his service on the canal he became Intimately acquainted with Do Lesseps, the master genius of the enterprise, and when the great French engineer proposed to build the Panama canal, Mr. Colombo was all too anxious to identify himself with this huge task.
