OPEN THE FRONT DOOR Overlooking $318 in cash robbers Sunday night entered the confectionery of Orville Nixon at Eighth and Main streets and escaped with $5.CT, Two dollars in coppers were taken from the cash drawer and left on a serving table In the back room, evidently too small an amount to take. When Mr. Nixon started to open up his store this morning he found the front door open. The cash register drawer was out and the drawer cash missing. In a small compartment of the drawer was $18 which had not been touched. The safe immediately back of the register was not securelylocked and contained $300 in cash and about $40 of valuable papers. It is believed amateurs are responsible for the job. TOY J. CI Third place on the "Association Roll of Honor," and eighth place on the "All-American Roll of Honor," in the International Bible study examinations of the Y. M. C. A. has been awarded to the Richmond association. The "Association Roll of Honor," awards are for the number of examination certificates awarded in proportion to the membership and "All-American Roll of Honor," is for the actual number of certificates awarded. Ten awards are made In each class. Last year the Richmond association was given third in the Ail-American class and ninth in the association class. Secretary George Goodwin considers the honor a great one. Death. AVicient and Modern. The art of the ancients would certainly seem to show that their conception of death was a much more cheerful one than that which has obtained In later times. It was at one time thought that the old Greeks and Egyptians had no artistic symbol for death, but this was a misconception. Death was almost Invariably represented by them as the kinsman of sleep. The Greeks personified It as Tbanatos, elder brother of Sleep. The Romans sometimes depicted Death and Sleep as twin children reposing In the arms of Night. The skull and cross bones and the skeleton as emblems of death .do not appear to hare become common nntil comparatively late Christian times. Two reasons, for Rawn's attitude on the hearing before Master-in-Chancery Taylor when he placed the responsibility for the "farming out" custom of the Illinois Central on the shoulders of President Harahan as wH as himself were advanced last night by an Illinois Central official. "The principal reason Rawn dragged in Harahan's name was his hatred for his former chief. He knew Harahan had started the inquiry which was slowly but surely tightening its coils about him. He knew he faced disgrace and that Harahan was partly responsible for turning on the spotlight of inquiry. In desperation he turned on his former enemy and attempted to make him a partner In his guilt." The strict injunction not to discuss the car fraud investigation was passed to Illinois Central officials by Hara han today. The Pinkerton office has issued many thousand slips offering $5,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the murderer of Rawn. There is no attempt at description of the alleged murderer offered by Mrs. Rawn and her married daughters. The police today refused to comment on the report that inspector Dew had decided to board the Montrose at sea. Montrose is Slowest. In the best informed circles, however, little credence is given to the report. The Moqtrose is a twelve-day boat, and the Laurentic makes the passage of the Atlantic in eight days. The Laurentic will get to Quebec twelve hours before the Montrose is due there, on Monday. The climax in the sensational dash across the ocean may come at Rimouski, where the ships are due the day before they reftch Quebec. To attempt a transfer at sea, even should no difficulty be experienced in having the vessels meet, would excite the suspicion of the quary, if nothing else did. In the eyes of the authorities little would be gained and such an arrest might prove the basis for a technical defense in court, the. sea being under the law of no country. . CITY ADVERTISEMENT.
