MILLER (Continued From Page Seven.) flood after Its principal fury had been spept Within 48 hours a 650 foot bridge had been thrown across the largest gap and the work of opening the way for the arrival of supplies and relief corps was under way. "Don't ask others to do what you yourself would not do," is the way in which Mr. Miller explains the Quick and speedy way in which the washedout railroad was replaced and relief given to hundreds of helpless persons. Still robust, fluent in speech and caring for his personal business Mr. Miller says he feels in as good health as at any time in the last thirty years. Ola cnglish Laws About Buttons. Buttons have engaged the attention of legislators even more frequently than hats. Five acts have been passed to protect the button Industry of England, and some of these are still unrepealed. An act of George L Inflicts a penalty of 40 shillings on any person using or selling "button made of cloth, serge, drugget, frieze or camlet" This law. says the London Daily Mail, was a source of Intense annoyance to foreign visitors, and the author of Le Parlsien a Londres." a guide written In 17S9. is careful to explain Its provisions at considerable length. He adds, however, that foreigners who are able to prove that their clothes were made In their own country escape the penalty when first summoned' on the understanding that they change their buttons within twentyfour hours." Work. There is a perennial nobleness and even sacredness in work. Were a man ever so benighted or forgetful of his high calllns there is always hope in him who actually and earnestly works. In idleness alone is there perpetual despair. .

SUSPECT THE HIRED HAND VICTIM'S WIFE JUMPED FROM BED AFTER SHOT AND RUSHED TO EMPLOYE'S ROOM BUT HE WAS NOT THERE. (American News Service) Columbus, Ind.. July 18. An unknown assassin knelt beside the bed of Alfred Sprague, a farmer living near Burney, Ind.. placed the muzzle of a shot gun under his right ear and sent a load of shot from a No. 12 guage gun crashing through Sprague's brain at midnight Mrs. Sprague awakened oy the shot, screamed for help after thrusting her hand into her husband's warm blood. She then rushed up stairs to the room of Ben Noble, a hired man. She declares Noble was not there, but later discovered him on the first floor in the room opposite that occupied by herself and husband. Going to the kitchen she found Sprague's gun in its usual place, but declares the muzzle was warm although the gun had been reloaded. No trouble ever occurred between Noble and Sprague, but Noble was arrested pending an investigation. Noble claims Sprague recently had trouble with a neighbor about a colt and threats had been exchanged. Mystery shrouds the affair, but the feel ing against Noble is strong. Girl Can Not Keep A Position
Because She Washington, D. C, July 18. The story of a girl who has lost four positions within a year because of her beauty, is now spreading about the city Mary Todd, too good looking to be allowed to work by her employers, has therefore left Washington and will try her fortunes elsewhere. Miss Todd, 19 years old, decided that to be a stenographer is as fruitless and thankless as being a shopgirl and milliner. As a stenographer her em ployer got mixed up in his dictation and included phrases that could not have been part of the correspondence she was taking down for him. As a shop girl the floor walkers strolled too often near her counter. As a milliner she aroused the envy and jealousy of customers. Miss Todd ' has been living in Georgetown for a little more than a year. She came here from a small town in Pennsylvania, well equipped for work, with money enough to wait until a reasonably good position was open to her and a thorough simple ed ucation. "Yes," she said today, half angrily and half amused, "I have been overwhelmed with offers of marriage as well -as of employment. But these of fers do not appeal to me. Most men forget that I have my own sweetheart and if I were inclined to consider a second one it seems that mine should be the privilege of Inviting his attentions without having them thrust upon me. "At first I did not take such things seriously, but since then I have known other girls who have shared the same fate, merely because they are more beautiful than their colleagues. "Generally these nn satisfactory con ditions exist only in offices maintained by one man who usually has not enough work to keep busy from the first to the last business hour of the day, and so endeavors to amuse himself as best he can. - But I have worked in an office where there were seventeen girls, and by the end of the third week I was embarrassed by repeated offers of company. A i;ew trial asked A motion for a new trial was made in circuit court this morning by Georgia E. Bradway who was refused a trial for divorce from William T- Bradway. Saturday.
