SMOKE DENSE DOWN-TOWN
LOWER GOTHAM IS DARKENED BY' PALL OF SMOKE TWO MEN REPORTED FATALLY BURNED IN CONFLAGRATION. New York, July 16. Fire that caused excitement throughout the entire down-town district this evening destroyed the Metropolitan Steamship company's quarters on Pier 14, North -river. Three alarms were turned In and soon dozens of engines and all avail able flreboats were on the scene. A quantity of Inflammable, material stored on the pier rapidly spread tha flames. The steamer Harvard, one of tha finest vessels of the Metropolitan) line, plying to Boston, was run Into tho river barely In time to escape. Flames burst out on her portside, but were quickly extinguished. The blaze was the most spectacular in many years. The loss is probably $500,000. v Several steamers were menaced) ' and one tug fled to midstream ablaxe. , Pier 15 soon caught fire. Several men were reported trapped on ' Pier 14. but the police declared that they probably jumped Into. the water. A number of horsea were Incinerated. The Lackawanna railroad company's : pier was threatened and alter the: fourth alarm was turned in, efforts were centered on this pier. ' u . When the fire was at its height. 2,000 persons were clogging the near by streets. The reserves from half a , dosen stations had their hands full. The fire started on Pier 14, former ly used by- the Red River line. The , first flames seen were In stack of I wicker chairs, which went up like matches. sDreadlnc . the flames with terrific rapidity. Pier, 15 formerly used by the Amert can line, was soon ablaxe end by the time the shrieking flreboats began to ' spot a acore of streams each, the fire was already one of the worst the waft, erfront has seen In years, - So intense was the heat that the firemen afloat and on land were seriously hampered. . The landsmen could get no closer than, a block to the heart of the blase. , John Galvin. longshoreman, trapped on the end of Pier 15, saved himself by diving into the river. The smoke filled the lower end of Manhattan and delayed traffic on the North river for a time. Two men, named Johnson - and Holmes, trapped on Pier 15, Jumped -only after they were terribly burned. They jumped into the river and were almost drowned. At the hospital it was said they would die. : TO CONDUCT ESTATE.1 Mrs. Fred V.
