No Place To Go

Not many nights ago a man was nearly arrested for running and skipping on a side street. He gave as his reason that "there was nothing else In the- town for a young man to do to amuse himself with." It appears that the gentleman in question had been thrilled by read ing the newspaper accounts of Reno and was indulging In this as one of the setting up exercises of training. ' For aught we know at the time of going to press the young person is still training in the shadow of the trees and may emerge from obscurity as the. champion. - And yet there Is a sting in his taunt to the policeman which not even the new Y. M. C. A. can quite efface.

Readers of this week's Saturday Evening PoBt will learn how Dreamland, Coney Island, Luna Park and all the glorious company of rival revels had their rise. And there is a pretty sound reason for it hidden away in the fluid things we call Americans.

All Americans love a circus would in fact like to have one every day. And so all over the country are springing up these palaces of delight which while they do not appeal to the Upper Crust of High Brows commonly called Aesthetes are ths best places in the world to forget a column of figures and Ironing Day. What we have to say may seem out of place to those whose idea of a good time is Pre-Raphaelite womei peddling poetry to the listening ear. Give us the Human Roulette Wh?l and some Cracker Jack. An electric lighted chute and ths chutes and all the razzle dazzles!

Some one can make some money and give us a lot of us real diversion if the Summer Park Idea is allowed to shoot (or should we say chute). There are several thousand people here who cannot go away for the cummer. They do not belong to the Country Club find nothing very exciting to do in the Glen and save up their money to go out of town with on Sunday.

Beveridge Speaks

"What is this Republic for? What is the purpose of this Nation? It Is to give every man, woman and child beneath our flag, a better chance, a more equal opportunity. To the extent that we keep our Nation true to this purpose we make our Nation a success; to the extent that we permit the Nation to fall short of this purpose we make our Nation a failure. "Our form of government was new to history and human experience; but the struggle whose triumph our nation represents was not new. It is as old as the world and will continue while time lasts. It is the eternal struggle of the people to get their rights from entrenched power; the ' eternal struggle of the people against those who exploit them; the eternal struggle of men and womtxn to throw off abuses that burden them . and to make their own and their children's lives happier and better. "We see this in early European history where the nobility treated the people as cattle, wringing their luxury from the toil of the people, and wringing their triumphs and their fame from the blood of the people. We see It later when kings organized and disciplined the nobility and by alleged divine right took from the people their substance. We see it In the story of the people's awakening sense of their rights; their repeated resistance to their oppressors; their winning of more and more power from their masters, until the glorious climax of the people's triumph occurred when our Nation was established and our brave new flag flung out before an astonished world, the emblem of human liberty, and the symbol of human hope. American history furnishes the highest example of human effort for liberty; may American history furnish the highest example to preserve It And just this is the great the only problem that confronts the American people today."

thought they were nothing but nuggets."

"Some of de smartest men," said Uncle Eben, " 'pears to use up deir smartness In makln' mistakes dat nobody else could have thought of."

Tho Loser. "So you went to Reno?" "Yes; to get a separation." "From your wife I" "No; from my money." Complaints are rife of decreased Interest in photographic societies and in photographic exhibitions. There are certainly fewer of the latter than there were six or eight years ago, and societies, if not actually less numerous are on the whole weaker both In numbers and in enthusiasm. In the United States their numbers have decreased SO to JO per cent, at least. It Is easy to deduce from this a decay of interest In photography and a lessening of the number of amateur photographers, and indeed, this easy operation has been performed. Simple deductions on complex questions should always be regarded with suspicion, and in this case suspicion develops Into Incredulity when it is found that side by side with the degeneration of the photographic society an increased and ever increasing business is being done in plates, films and papers. "And so if you see this story in print, you will understand that business Is business, and that if Art gets very far ahead of. Commerce, she will have to get up and hustle." O. Henry.

So did an Indianapolis merchant: An Indianapolis retail merchant recently took advantage of the nature of an accident which happened to his store. A runaway trolley car had crashed into his show window wrecking it While the crowd of people, who hadbeen attracted by the collision were still gathered about the front of the store, the enterprising retailer came struggling through the wreckage annd placed a large card bearing the words "All cars stop at Blank's' in a prominent place. The effect was forthcoming. System. The Palladium reaches THE MOST PEOPLE who are GOOD CUSTOMERS of someone. Its rates are LOWER IN PROPORTION than other newspapers which do not cover the field.
