Julrfl -Wlth General Greeley and Col David Bralnerd miss ing, the survivors of the ill-fated Gree ley expedition of 1KS1 to the North pole met in this city the other day at what must have seemed to them a rather grim reunion. Morris Connel, one of them who is employed by the United States weather bureau at San Joae, Cal., came to town especially for tka m- 4a Im KaIIauIhs ( tMlwTht Ka Iha last opportunity he would have of see ing alive his companions on that traclQ Journey to the farthest north. But seven of the members of the expoaiuon survived tne norrors or me Arc tlo and they would have perished too but for the courage of Admiral Schley who bad pushed a relief party to their rescue at Cape Sabine, Of the seven, but five axe still alive. The rigor of the lonf night in the ice drifts have left its imprint on all of them. ' ' The three who met here presented a pathetic picture, as they recounted some of the anguishing experiences of the; expedition when starvation and disease overtook, them. It was a story that chilled the marrow. As you listened to it you could fancy yourself stalking amidst the crazed and famish 4 crew abandoned to a horrible death In the igloes, on the desolate plain of ice, A touch of pathos was added to the recital by the news that Albeit Verse, one of the companions of Peary on bis successful trip to tho North Pole bad died Tuesday In one of the local hospitals. ' Verse was one of Peary's men who located the Gree ley camp at Cape Sabine and recovered the bleached bones of some of tho Oreoley dead. 70S in A BARflEL (American News Service) Cincinnati. July 6. Mastiff Is u tn in applied to a very large and powerful iwle of the cunine family, und there Is considerable conflict of opinion reirdlng the origin of the word. Some claim that It Is derived from the Italian mastlno or the Freucb uiasttu. txitli of which signify large limbed. This word, they 6ay. wes graduiilly corrupted into ma sty. a Lincolnshire expression meanlug very large, muscular or bur. until it gradually assumed its present form. DISOWNED HER BABY
Did a Steerage Mother, So the First Cabin Swells Made it a Lingerie Wardrobe. WAS SENT BACK TO EUROPE New York. July . A pathetic case of a mother refusing to recognize her own child was called yesterday to the attention of the immigration authorities at Ellis Island on the arrival in port of the Noordam from Rotterdam. When the ship was in midocean, Ce cilia Dudonasfski, a second cabin passenger gave birth to a baby boy. The newcomer was a buster and soon after its presence aboard had been heralded became the idol of the ship. Its mother was unconscious some twenty hours after the youngster had made his advent, idisowned it. Although desperately ill, the woman insisted the baby belonged to her sister. So firmly did she adhere to this that the child was taken to the infirmary in the first cabin and put on milk and water diet. The women passengers made baby clothes for it from their skirts and waists and by the time the ship got into port presented the little one with a full layette. Because of the position assumed by the mother both will be returned to the port from which the mother embarked.
