Missouri and Nebraska are devoted to raising corn for the especial purpose of producing cobs suitable for fashioning into pipe bowls. The grain itself is marketed, of course, but the cob on which it grows Is the real harvest and Is cut carefully into proper lengths, smoothed aud polished, the soft inner pulp being gouged out by specially constructed machinery. The corncob pipe goes to every country in the world where men smoke and is especially in favor in Australia and New Zealand, where it is regarded as characteristically American, because it suggests the idea of Yankee ingenuity. As a Tesult of race. riots and conflicts between the whites and .blacks brought on by Johnson' defeat of Jeffries, a total of eighteen persons are dead and more than three hundred injured, many seriously. Most of the serious conflicts occurred , in the southern states, according to today's reports. There were numerous riots in all large cities and in many smaller ones as well. One hundred arrests, principally blacks, were made at Louisville alone. . THREE AT NEW ORLEANS. 1 New Orleans, La., July 5.Thre4 negroes have been killed and a dozen whites and blacks seriously injured ia riots in northern Louisiana, resulting from the Jeffries-Johnson fight, according to dispatches received here to day.
