The large hailstones pictured above fell in Sunbury, Pa., on June 18th and are here reproduced one quarte r of the original size. The hail followed a severe rain storm and broke the hot spell of that week. This was , the first time in many years that hail has fallen during the month of June in Sunbury and the oldest resident never recalls seeing hailstones the size of those falling on Jtine 18.

What is said to be the first instance of the use of the alternating current for railroad block signaling is about to be made on a portion of the Pennylvania lines west of Pittsburg. The economies of the innovation have been established, and if found to be entirely satisfactory extension of the service will be made on a largo scale. In the operation of the block signal systems the direct current from storage batteries has been made use of, and the dif ficulty and expense of maintaining these has always been a serious matter. The use of the alternating current, which is much more convenient, has been installed by the trolley lines in different parts of the country and has been found to be entirely successful. It now is possible to telephone from Liverpool ' to Paris. Brussels and several smaller cities and towns la France and Belgium. A national physical laboratory in England uses a whirling table with a sixty foot arm to test the thrust of airship propellers. - PALLADIUM WANT ADS PAY.

A HEAVY PROPERTY LOSS

RIFLE BULLET PENETRATES THE. WALL OF A HARDWARE STORE AND IT EXPLODES A MAGAZINE OF GUNPOWDER. (American News Srvtc Helena, Mont. July l.-Six persona are dead, three are dying, and twentyfour badly injured, and fully $2."A0tX worth of property lies in ruins today. as the result of a powder explosion in the store of the Graves Mercantile company at Boulder, thlrty-flve miles from Helena, last night. The dead are: George Hart, his wife and their two-year-old daughter; Mrs. Gladys Momn, Mrs. Robinson and David Klrby. The explosion followed the firing of a 22-calibre bullet from a rifle into a wall by George Hart, who was killed. Hart had been firing at a target and suddenly decided to use the side of the store building instead. A large quantity of powder was stored In the building and a terrific explosion followed. The whole neighborhood for miles about felt the shock. Aid for the Injured was rushed out on a special train and doctor and nurses who arrived too late to catch it, went out in autos. The telephone exchange in Boulder was one of the buildings destroyed.
