With the establishment of this record for freight transportation, the time will have been reduced to what was required several years ago to make the trip on a passenger train. The fastest mail train on the road now makes the trip from this city in eighteen hours. A WELL BONG USED The water supply of the poor farm which has been obtained heretofore from springs near the railroad, is now dependent on a large well. It is thought, however, that after the Pennsylvania railroad company completes its work of double tracking, arrangements can again be made whereby the old method of obtaining water will be restored. T JOSIE Josie Bond tried to make light of it when charged in police court this morning with throwing a lamp at her step-father, but Justice, groping in the dark, handed her SI and costs on a plain charge of assault Josie had indulged in a few words with her mama, and when the foster parent interfered it nearly cost the gentleman his scalp. After eleven days in the Home, the mayor suggests that Josie depart for a dryer climate for her health.

St. Louis Republic. ENGLISH COUNTRY BANKS. It Takes Strong Iron Bar to Win tho Depositors' Confidence. Rural customers attach great Im portance to the. bank's outward ap pea ranee. A thrifty tradesman haying opened a deposit account with a bank distant some thirty miles . from his home, the cashier had the curiosity to ask why he traveled so far when there was a braucli of the same bank almost at his door. The depositor smiled knowingly and replied. "1 lodged opposite here all the time while this bank was being built, so I know it's safe." Balance sheets to the rustle are a meaningless and arbitrary ar rangemeut of figures. Iron bars be understands. In a city In the north of England there is a bank widely known for the artistic merit of Its doors. Designed by an eminent sculptor, they are ex ecuted in relief In copper or bronne and appear to represent tableaux from "AesoD's Fables" and Greek history. About a week after they were unreUea an oia man wno nsa . been a oepositor for many years withdrew bis balance and took it to a rival bank almost opposite. Questioned as to bis don't hold wi' them doors of theirs. Punched tin ain't businesslike, and It ain't safe." London Saturday Review. A Perfect Disguise. Frank Lockwood's banter was ex cellent and always good humored. I recollect him cross examining a detective in a divorce case, says a writer in London M. A. P.
