FARMERS ANSWERED CALL
Marshalltown, la., June 18. With her hands bound behind her back by a 200 pound man, whose attempt to attack her she had repulsed successfully, Miss Edna Deaver, 18 years old, rang a telephone with her teeth yesterday, pushed the receiver from its hook with her shoulder, and shouted over the wire for help. Then, uncertain whether or not any one had answered the telephone and
heard her appeal, the frightened girl stumbled across a plowed field for nearly a cuarter of a mile in search
of some one to loose her bonds and
prevent another attack by. the unidentified man who had overpowered and tied her. Faints When Rescuers Come. Half way on her terror-haunted journey to the nearest farm house she met half a dozen young men hastening to her aid. The telephone she had rung with her teeth was on a rural circuit and several farmers had answered her ring and heard her ap
peal. They had started post haste for the place she had named.
When her rescuers untied the rope
that held her hands Miss Deaver fainted. She was carried to a farm house,
and as soon as she had revived and
given a description of her assailant
a posse was formed to hunt the man. Other posses were got together quickly, and tonight more than 100 deputy sheriffs, constables, policemen from this city, and farmers are scouring the woods and fields in the pursuit. Miss Deaver, whose home is in Marshalltown, was a guest at the farm home of her cousin, T. J. Cheville, where she went a short time ago to spend the summer. This morning her cousin and Mrs. Cheville drove to the city, leaving Miss Deaver at home alone with their two sons, both less than 6 years old. Assailant Gloats Over Girl. The girl was ironing in the kitchen when she heard the door open. Thinking it was one of the children, she
did not turn around and a second later
she was seized from behind. Her assailant was a well dressed man,' with a red face and soft hands, she says. He bound her hands and threw her to the floor, threatening to kill her if she made an outcry.
Then he sat down and gloated over her beauty, telling her she was the prettiest girl he had ever seen. Miss Deaver then began to scream the names of her two young cousins and the man apparently thought they were young men, for he fled. Neither of the children answered her call, and finally she hit upon the expedient of ringing the telephone with her teeth-
At Local Theaters
At the Murray. The bill this week is causing considerable comment because of its uniqueness and quality. The acts this week are good and of sufficient variety to satisfy the. different tastes of the patrons of Richmond's most beautiful
playhouse the Murray. Miss Margar
et Ryan in "the Eagle and the Girl
sings in the most popular manner, her impersonations are excellent. Her songs pertaining to the lodge men has
met with popular favor at every per
formance. This song is especially ap
propriate for this week in Richmond,
Certainly the climax of her act occurs when she sings "Come and Fly with Me" and she is carried out into the audience above their heads by a large eagle. This has never failed to
be met with abundant applause show
ing how pleasing her act is. -The Black Brothers with banjo mu
sic and especially well executed dancing are always popular. Miss Shields
and company in "Broadway, U. S. A.'
present an interesting comedy which
contains some good lines and inter
esting situations. Faustus, the spec
tacular, introduces a number of new feats in magic. The motion picture Is
comedy and good too. Next week a
spectacular pantomime novelty.
