NEGRESS CAUSES SOCIAL UPHEAVAL She Is Determined to Attend Dance at the East Orange High School.

SOCIETY IS DISTRAUGHT

AND THE SCHOOL GRADUATING CLA88 18 REALLY QUITE EMBARRASSED OVER THIS "UNFORTUNATE AFFAIR"

New York, June 17. The determiaation of Irene Vandervall, a aegress and a pupil In the East Orange high school, to attend the dance of the graduating class of that school in the fashionable womans' club rooms at Orange on June 24 has set the social atmosphere of the two Oranges boiling, and complications of the most perplexing order are in prospect. As a member of the graduating class of the high school she is entitled to and received two tickets to the dance which is one of the features of the ending of the high school curriculum. In addition, she and her sister, who may also be graduated, received two other tickets to be used In the event that her sister passes the final examination and is given her diploma. Those two ere the only negro girls in a class of about 80 boys and girls many of whom are scions of some of the most exclusive families of the most prominent social set in the Oranges. Offered to Buy Tickets. When the parents of these pupils learned that the two negro girls had tickets and intended to take part In the dance the news spread through the city like an electric flash. Offers to relieve the surcharged atmosphere by purchasing the four tickets at whatever price the owners might demand were extended to the girls and were Indignantly rejected. Falling in this, some of the white girls unable to contemplate with complacency the social mingling of races on the waxed floor of the fashionable Woman's club when the two girls should bring their negro escorts to

the dance, began to decline the Invitations to the function. How far this movement has extended no one knows, but the parents of the white girls are in despair of success by conciliatory measures, as Jas. N. Vandervall, father of the two negro girls, is a stanch supporter of the rights of his daughters to share all public honors and privileges in common with the white people. It was he who led the fight against the segregation of a foreign element from the other pupils In the grammar schools a few years ago. as a result of which the board of education compromised by establishing a class for backward pupils, into which some of the descendants of foreigners found their way, much to the relief of the best circles of society. They entertain little hope that Vandervall will yield any of the rights of his children to attend this dance, and are puzzled as to what step to take to prevent the social climax that impends.

Case of Charles E. Vinton Against Traction Company Thrown Out of Court.

AN APPEAL WILL BE MADE

At the close of the presentation of evidence by the plaintiff's attorneys in the damage suit of Charles E. Vinton against the Ohio Electric company for $1,800, John F. Robbins, for the traction company moved that the court instruct the jury to render a verdict for the defense on the grounds of insufficient evidence. After taking the matter under advisement until yesterday afternoon. Judge Fox so instructed the jury. A. C. Lindemuth, who with Frank M. Conner represented the plaintiff, stated that he would appeal the case to the supreme court.

'I he Loss of an Eye. The loss of an eye. It Is stated, deprives the individual of one-sixth of the field of vision. The power of direction Is also lost, so that a person with one eye cannot hit a given point until he becomes accustomed to the changed conditions.

(Palladium Special) Indianapolis, June 17. Chairman Lee of the republican state committee has returned from a trip through the

northern part of the state, and he reports that the talk about the manufacturers being opposed to the re-election of Senator Beveridge is without foundation. Mr. Lee spent some time in Lake county where the largest manufacturing industries in the state are located, and at South Bend, which also is one of the largest manufacturing points in Indiana. He says the manufacturers who were said to be opposing Beveridge, because of his stand on the tariff are not, in fact, opposing him at all. He said he found one peculiar situation among them, and he compared the argument being used with one that was used in the ease of the brewers of the state who fought against the enactment of the high license three years ago. The brewers at that time opposed the passage of this bill and laughed at the efforts to control their business. Brewers Defeated Bill. The result was that the brewers defeated the high license bill and later they were compelled to accept county option which was much more stringent and restrictive on their business tivan any high license law could have been. Chairman Lee argues now that it the manufacturers oppose the creation of a tariff commission which will make fair schedules they may be com

pelled to accept schedules which will be much worse for them. This would be true, he says; if the democrats get control of congress. Senator Beveridge stands for a tariff commission, and Chairman Lee says that this is what tne manufacturers ought to favor. He also points out that the tariff commission Idea was formulated; at the conference held in this city a year or so ago, and that the conference was called by the manufacturers. He says it would be illogical now for them to oppose the very thing which they themselves started at that time. He does not believe the manufacturers will take such a stand. 'l was not able to find any republicans who will not vote and support

the ticket this year," said Chairman Lee. "I asked several republicans if they could give the name of a single republican who was going to bolt the ticket, and they could not give a name. This makes me believe that there is nothing In that kind of talk." Chairman Lee leaves today for New York to attend the reception to Theodore Roosevelt, and it is reported that he will try to havss a talk with the former president and that he will invite

i him to make speeches in Indiana dur

ing the coming campaign. He does not say that he will extend this invitation but it Is understood that he will. It is said that arrangements have been made to bring Senators Dolliver, Lafollette, Cummins and other insurg-

! ents into the state, however, and that j they will make speeches in behalf of - the republican ticket,' ' -
