A sharply pointed knife with a heavy handle is stuck, very lightly Into the lintel of a door, and the nut that is to be cracked is placed under it, so that when the knife is released by a touch the nut is cracked. What simple and certain plan can you suggest for making sure that the knife shall hit the nut exactly in the middle without fail? Here it is: Hold a cup of water so that it will wet the handle of the knife, then remove it and place the out exactly on the spot where the drop of water falls from the handle. The Surprise. All the players but one must stand In a circle, but not with hands joined. Their hands must be held behind their backs with the palms turned outward, and they must all keep their eyes on the ground. If any one looks up he or she must pay a forfeit. The one left out takes a .handkerchief and dances lightly around the circle and slips the handkerchief into any one's hand she chooses. No one will know to whom It is given, for all eyes are looking at the floor. Then suddenly the one to whom the handkerchief Is given will whisk it up at one of the others. The person

If she succeeds the captive becomes "handkerchief bearer." but if the one pursued gets around the circle and back to her place then the first bearer pays a forfeit and continues in the office. Spoons A Game. This game is a variety of the old time favorite, "blind man's buff." The players form a circle. One stands in the center, blindfolded, with his bands extended before him. holding a spoon in each hand. The other players march round him, clapping their hands in time to a tune that may be sung or played on the piano in marching time. When the blind man calls out "Spoons!" the others stop, and he finds his way to any player he can reach and tries to find out who he.or she is by touching with the spoons only. He may use them as he likes, but it is usually only a lucky guess if he Is right. If wrong he must try again and continue blind till he finds a successor by means of the spoons. The one rightly guessed is then blindfolded and takes his place. Why John Was Late. Father How is it. John, that you come home late to dinner every evening? John That's 'cause the town clock's so big. Father What's the clock got to do with it? John It's so big it takes the hands an awful long time to get around it. If you'd buy me a little watch like yours I'd get home a great deal quicker. Conundrums. What is the difference between a spendthrift and a feather bed? One is hard up and the other soft down. Why is love like a canalboat? Because It is an internal transport. Why did not Eve have the measles? Because she'd Adam (had 'em). Why are little birds always sad in the morning? .Because their little bills are all over dew (due. Master Robin. Of all the chaps who come with spring I love dear robin best. He is the first to sing: his sons. The first to build his nest. He greets you, too. as you pass by With such a note or Joy. I do believe he has a heart Exactly like a boy. He's not a coward no, not he. He never takes a dare, . But if there's any fun around He's sure to take his share. Besides, he is a gentleman Who's always nicely dressed , In quite a stylish swallowtail And very handsome vest. He steps quite like a dandy when He's out on dress parade. And. though Jack Frost is watching- him. He's not a bit afraid. But. independent as you please. He heeds nobody's call And sings Just when he has a mind In springtime or in fail. He's good friends, too. with all the flow. ' era And wakes them from their sleep. Tis at the sound of his dear voice That they begin to peep. I lev him and his song, and when I hear it sweet and clear I shout. "Now hurry up. Miss Spring,

As every mother knows, it is a much more difficult matter to make a mod ish, simple child's dress than it is to make an elaborate costume. While the clothes of young girls are always simple, they must be strictly up to date. The fashionable Russian influence is noticeable in children's garments this season. These models usually consist of one piece frocks, but in the smart gown illustrated the Russian blouse of linen is gracefully bung over a plaited skirt. The blouse is elaborately embroidered, and there is a guimpe of sheer lawn, cut low and rounded at the neck, finished with a plaited frill. The ribbon sash goes through slits at the waist line of the blouse- A quaint bonnet made of small pink flowers and a pink silk parasol trimmed with a border of Dresden ribbon complete this fetching costflme. When Company Comes. A new hint in serving grapefruit is to flavor it with maple sirup. The pulp is loosened from the skin, as usual, with a sharp knife, after which the center is filed up with the sirup, which mast be the pure sugar melted down. This adds a new and very delicious flavor. Currant jelly, too. haa been discovered as an excellent substitute for the rum which was for a long time the only flavoring used with this fruit. The nam had been broiled until it was brown and then ground very fine and mixed plentifully with mayonnaise. The meat may be cooked in the oven, a thin slice being allowed to bake until it is well browned, or the meat may be fried. There is a more definite flavor about ham cooked in any of these ways than there is if it is boiled.
