HAS A SPLENDID RECORD THERE ARE ABOUT FORTY APPLICANTS , FOR THE POSITION WHICH WILL SOON BE VACATED BY C. W, KNOUFF.

Prof. Isaac E. Neff, principal of the South Bend high school and one. of the best known educators In the state, has. been offered by the school board the princlpalsbip of the Richmond high school, " to -succeed ' Prof. ,C. W. Knouff, resigned. Prof. Neff was - in the city yesterday in consultation with' the board,' but the parties did not enter into a contract, although it Is very probable he will accept the position. The South Bend high school is one or the largest in the state and has gained a wide reputation as a result of Prof. Nefrs -efforts. However, the school does not equal the local one with the added course of instruction which will be made possible with the opening of the new high school building, next September. The matter of salary has not as yet been made pubJlc, nor will it be until all matters

CLEANING A BLOCK. ' By Mrs. F. W. StephensA noteworthy example of "block cleaning occurred at East Main Street Friends' church yard yesterlay afternoon. Thirty or 'more of Fred Charles' Sunday school class met there to make neat and attractive the meeting house grounds. From near and far they came with hoe and rake and lawn mower. The men did not "Jet the women do the work," for all who were interested In this worthy movement "labored willingly" with his hands. Anyone who passes that yard will notice the effect of the effort. The block presents all the time a fairly good appearance but now it Is noticeably clean and correct. . ' Moral Richmond stands high as a beautiful city, but oh, how mych more should she shine if all" residents would take the lesson and trim up, and make vigorous attempts to beautify their premises. You'll find more trash and dirt than you imagine If once you set about it. Every Sunday school student who worked at the church yard yesterday is thereby a nobler and better one.
