' There is au old. belief that crickets, locusts aud other Insects give warning of the coming of extremely warm weather by the unusual clamor they make at night. As a matter of fact, they chirp, because it Is warm, not hecause It is going to be worm. A certain young man told recently of a discovery that be made last rh miner baaed on tbe chirping of the crickets. He noticed, of course, that the hotter It was the faster they chirped and the cooler It was the slower they chirped, and be conceived the idea of making then serve as a sort of thermometer. Having counted the number of chirps made by a cricket one nlgnt. bo looked at a thermometer and found that It marked G4 degrees. The cricket bad chlrod 100 times in a minute. By noticing It night after night be arrived at a regular rale, which is that for every degree above 64 the cricket chirps five time. When It chirps 130 times In a minute, therefore, you will find the thermometer marking 70 degrees. What queer ways some people have of amusing themselves! Chicago News. A Much Pis cussed Question. Why are the trousers that sailors wear so wide at the bottom? That Question has been asked over and over ngaiu. and. strange as it may seem, no one not a sailor knows exactly how to answer it. A seafaring man who Is prefty well Informed in 'questions of that kind says it grew out of tbe old time custom of cutting ont sailors' trousers on shipboard, when the cotter '. would simply ran the - shears straight down tbe cloth without making any attempt to give the leg shape. This was due partly to haste and partly to Indifference to style. Another plausible explanation - Is tbe following: Sailors frequently have to row ashore and barefooted step into the water and pull their boat up on tbe beach. Tbe width of their trousers st the bottom allows them to roll their trousers high to keep them dry. Tom Tiddler's Ground. This is an old English outdoor game, which American children nave altered to "Dixie's land." It is played in tbe same way. . : One player ' personates Tom Tiddler, wbo is supposed to be the owner of vast stores of . treasure burled on his ground, a tract set apart and allotted to him. The other players invade his territory, and. as trespassers, be tries to catch them. They shoot in tones meant to be tantalizing: Her t stand on Tom Tiddler's Ftcktaa up sold and stiver, ot; . . v bn o Dtxta-a land. LHxle can t catch tne. ' . If Tom or Dixie can touch any passer, while on his land that player becomes Tom. or. Dixie. Some special line eboold define the boundary to prevent any possible ittspate sboux tne territory.

A group of men were discussing human nulure and tbe difficulty of looking always on the bright and glittering side of. things when the dingy, dark brown side is uppermost and seems destined to remain uppermost. "It's a great thing to cultivate a disposition to make the most of things In this life." remarked a man who used to drive trotting horses for a living. -The most striking illustration I ever bad of tnat was in a big horse race at a county fair down the state about ten years ago. The mau driving alongside of me let his borse swerve on tho back stretch, aud my sulky was upset. That caused a general mlxup. and a colored driver right behind me got unloaded and bis sulky broken to pieces. Well. I lay there for a minute, and then, as I didn't teeni to be much hurt, I started to get up. Hey, boss, dou" yo' go gittin upl yelled the colored driver at me excitedly. "'Whyr I asked him, some puzzled. - 'Cause. . he answered. yo" all lay right wha yo' is. and In a minute they'll sen' roun', hyab and hanl ns back pas' tbe gran' stan' In a caibhiage.' - -Sure enough, tbey did. and when we drove up that home stretch In the open hack they sent for us that colored man was the happiest person I ever saw. Now. that's what I call making tbe most of things." Cleveland Plain Dealer. COURTSHIP IN PORTUGAL The Way the Young People Begin Their Lovemaking. The most iniportaut event in the life of a Portuguese woman is marriage. Next iu importance are the early daya of courtship, for a Portuguese courtship Is the essence of romance, and the ways of the Portuguese lover are singularly picturesque. Here is a little drama to which Cupid is stage director. , If a young Portuguese sees in the street a pretty girl with whom be would like to become acquainted be follows her. Chaperons sre not impossible obstructions. He follows ber right up to her very door and notes tbe address. Next day he comes again, and if the young lady approves of him for she certainly saw him tbe day beforeshe is on the lookout. Sometimes bard fate in tbe guise of an angry , parent prevents ber. and then the gallant youth is kept waiting. Sooner or later she leans over tbe balcony and smiles at him. The happy youth ties a note to cord which the fair lady drops from the balcony. The next day. the young man conies again. This time he rings st tbe door. . If the inquiries which the young ladys elders have ' made , prove satisfactory the swain is admitted to make the acquaintance of. the youna lady. After that courtship In Portugal is about the same as it is in Kankakee or Kalamazoo. Leslie's Weekly.

In. various races no race, however primitive, baa been discov ered in which red-green blindness was tbe universal or general condition, and this Is a .fact of some interest in con nectlon with tbe physiology of color vision, for It seems probable that redgreen blindness since It is uot by any means a diseased condition represents a reverslou to a more primitive state of tbe color sense. If this Is so no race of men remains in tbe primitive stages of tbe evolutiou of tbe color sense. The development of s color sense substantially to the condition in which we have it was probably a prehuman achievement. Professor R. S. Woodworth in Science, k - A Gambler's Philosophy. . "There's no use in trying to buck against bad luck." said the succe ful gsmbler as be put down his glass of vichy and milk. "If you see luck is going against you. drop out.' If the -fickle goddess of fortune is with you. woo ber for all you are worth. That's the whole secret of tbe game. . I've been gambling all my Hfe. and 1 rare ly lose. Why? Because I never take a chance against bad luck. Lock is bound to be either with you or against you. Too win or yon lose. . Tbe chances of breaking even are mighty slim. So I never buck bad luck."
