A mother who bad struggled for several years to raise a delicate child was met some time later by a friend who bad known of these early struggles against delicacy. i " "How is Nellie?' asked Jbe friend somewhat fearfully, as one who might speak of some one who might have passed out of life. The mother laughed and pointed to
a rugged little girt ut her side. "She does not look much of an invalid, does
eher -
Inquiries in regard to what made tbe sudden change in tbe child's health
drew forth tbe fact that strength was caused by cold sponges each morning. Tbe child had been subject to bad bronchial coughs, also to sharp' attacks of quinsy. A child specialist advised cold sponges each day ti pop, arising. In fear and trembling the mother started, thougb in the midst of winter. The child, stood in a basin or tub of lukewarm water so as to feel no chill; then water at the temperature of 75 degrees was poured or sprayed on the body, the face and hands having been first carefully washed in hot water
and sprayed with cold. This avoids I
delay and chilling. The child is then quickly wrapped in a great Turkish towel and vigorously rubbed until dry. This bath must be given in a warm room, and the child should not be plunged into ice cold water, as it Is too much of a shock to the' heart. Tbe temperature of tbe bath can be gradually reduced.
Each time the face is washed the little girl is Instructed to dash ber throat with water as cold as It runs ' from the spigot. This seems to have entirely overcome tbe tendency to quinsy, and the child has not had s bad cold since the bathing process was started. Besides overcoming the tendency to colds, tbe baths seem to have Improved the small girl's general health. She Is no longer anaemic, ber circulation Is better, and she seems to be less Devlh. Naming th Bsby. People who have followed the changes In Christlau names can almost tell a woman's age by ber name, a fact which ought to gfre parentavfood for thought when It comes to tbe naming of a girl baby.

cnoosing-Dororny.'Margery, rnynis or some other English name of the late eighteenth century for her youngest, while for the last ten years Catharine, with a "C." Elizabeth and other straitlaced names have succeeded the bookish Phyllis. Babies coming Into the world at the present time are getting the benefit of quaint family names almost forgotten and more than likely despised by the original owners, as the fad is to have as unusual a Christian name as possible picked out; hence Dorinda, Anne, Eupbemia, Sophia. Cynthia. Justlna and others are culled for occasions from tbe family Bible or names of Puritan savor, such as Prlscilla or Deborah, are taken from New England annals. Another fashion ; which has already taken hold is that of combining tbe
names of tbe parents or of other members of the family to produce a name which has tbe merit of singularity and sounds "Christian" at least. Georgeanna is one of these names, although the previous existence of Georgianna would seem to have made its Invention unnecessary. Jeremina and Johuanna have both been used, and others more curious still are bestowed upon helpless Infancy, ,
; On the republican side of the house, the most interesting comment is that which is not intended for publication. In brief, the New York machine is condemned for having nominated Aldridge, whose name figured in the insurance scandals, thus putting up the weakest possible man. In tbe second place the defeat Is charged to the high prices of foodstuffs. Some of the republicans say that if Chairman Payne and Speaker Cannon had not opposed the Foelker resolution to have meats placed on the free list for one year there might have been another Btory to tell, and the defeat might not have been so pronounced. ,
