He perhaps, controls more votes than any other man in the cabinet and is considered a strong man with the rural population. Mr. Wilson usually wears' a plain business suit Only on special occasions does he appear In a frock coat and silk bat or in evening dress. He has no expensive tastes, such as an automobile or handsome carriage to carry him around the city, or to and from the department or on social calls. He use s a government carriage, a very democratic institution, using it for bis departmental duties as well as for social purposes. . Secretary Dickinson and Postmaster General Hitchcock are both types of progressive Americans. They ask numerous questions and run their departments according to their personal views. Social obligations do not interfere with their public business. They are tactful, resourceful and at the same time conservative in administering their respective departments. While not as approachable as some other members of the cabinet they are not described either as aristocrats or democrats, but are In the intermediate class. ' . Hitchcock the Sleuth. Postmaster General Hitchcock is known as the "gumshoe man," by reason of bis detlcence in discussing polltics or the affairs of his department. He usually arrives at his office early In the morning and often stays until late at nlpht, grinding out work. A STRANGE HH

(American News Service) Milan, April 16 A sinister light has been thrown on the mysterious Russian trunk murder perpetrated at a lodging house in Rome last March.

The first clues tended to show that

the victim was either a revolutionist or a police spy. Cavallere Gasti, then assistant to the chief of police at Rome, was sent to Warsaw to prosecute inquiries. Before setting out he resolved to experiment with, the finger-print system. To that end he had the body of the victim exhumed and the Imprints photographed. The result was that on his arrival in Russia the imprints were found to correspond exactly with thoBe of a vanished youth named Tarantovsky, the son of a manufacturer of false keys, residence at Zabudevka. He belonged to an Anarchist club at Warsaw, and subsequently offered his

services as Informer to the local se

cret police, but was soon after thrown

into prison on the discovery being

made that he had been playing into bands of revolutionary comrades. Tarantovsky thereupon avowed his determination to create a colossal scandal If brought to trial by a full exposure of the methods of the Russian secret detective system. Hence it was decided to release

him and to put spies on his track instead with instructions to kill him as

a dangerous enemy. The assassins whom Cavallere Gasti unearther were identified as belonging to the Warsaw

district The dogged Tarahtovsky's steps to Rome, and there, in the guise of friendly fellow-countrymen wishing to cure him of a malady from which he was suffering, they administered injections of cyanide of pottassium. . When . unconsciousness supervened they deposited their victim in a trunk, locked It and took their departure. The Italian government has applied for extradition and for authority to arrest them. The ministry of foreign affairs has just received an offjlal communication from St. Petersburg in. which the Russian authorities refuse to comply with this demand.

ARE MANY SUICIDES

(Special Cable from the International Newsservice) St Petersburg, April 16. Another epidemic of suicide has broken out la this city. Fifteen cases were reported in one day. Among the victims were three girls aged 16, 18 and 20. and one of them s university student, and the other two pupils at the Conservatoire and a high school. They were the two daughters and niece of a rich merchant ot Minsk, and had come to St Petersburg to complete their studies. They poisoned themselves with syanide of potassium. When the tragedy was discovered the musical student was seated at the piano; Chopin's Funeral March was open in front of her. The youngest of the girls was lying dead at the player's feet The body of the third girl waB found under a bed. According to the evidence of - other occupants of the house the girls played, sang and recited until a very late hour of the night They left several letters addressed to realtives and friends in which they said that they., had resolved to kill themselves as there was no sense in life.

"Big Tim" Sullivan, Tammany leader and the stakeholder of the Jeffries-Johnson match, was subjpoenaed today by Supreme Court Justice Greenbaum In the suit of Dr. Coakley against Tex Rlckard, one of the promoters of the Jeffries-Johnson fight The physician sued Rickard for $230, claiming that amount for attending Rlckard's daughter. The promoter denied the claim. After the consultation of Sullivan today, it was said that an agreement had been reached. The stakes are held by Sullivan and amount to $20,000 in guarantees.
