(American Nsws Service) Paris, April 16. A fortune of over $15,000, has been discovered in the lodgings of Miss Oliver, an Englishwoman, whese death occurred at Dieppe at the age of eighty. She had lived for years in abject poverty, supported by charity. At one time she earned her living as a teacher of languages, but for many years psst she had been unable to earn

a living. She was well Known in

Dieppe, however, and was thf recipient of much charity, few grudging their contributions towards the support of

the venerable "Miss." Everybody believed her to be absolutely destitute, but when she died two days ago( says the "Echo de Paris," a bag containing gold and notes was. found at her lodgings. They amounted altogether to $15,000. Tied up with the bag was a will, properly .drawn up and witnessed, by which she left the whole of her secret fortune to hospitals In London.

ern Vanderbilt" Race at Elgin, Illinois.

Elgin, 111., April 16. Elgin today is

discussing the probability of having a

Western Vanderbilt" automobile race

held here late In August or early In

September if the present plans are

carried through. The Trace may be

held on an eight mile road circuit near

this city. The chief trophy will be

known as the Elgin Cup. The un

dertaking will be financed -by the peo

ple of Elgin and conducted under the auspices of the contest committee of

the Chicago Motor club. . President Beecroft, Secretary Clinton, Chairman Root, of the contest board and Director Slnsabaugh, who arrived here today, after traveling the course, met the enthusiastics of Elgin and found the plan to hold the race generally favored.

Chicago. April 16. Frieda Dertlske. six years old. was found murdered in a barn on the north side this afternoon. The child had evidently been decoyed into the barn, tortured and finally strangled. Marks on her throat showed that a powerful man had strangled her.

COLD WAVE FEARED.

The wind storm last evening, was

one of the worst experienced . this

year. The wind was terrific but little

damage was reported. It turned cold

after the rain and many were afraid that a cold wave would settle upon

the community.

The condition of James Van Dusen, a weH known citizen and retired railroader, continues much the same but members of the family say that he is In a critical condition. ' Any change

in his condition is so slight, that it is hardly noticeable. The attending physician does not extend any hopes for

his recovery-

Mr. Van Dusen has been very feeble

for several ; months. About, eignt

weeks ago, his health, which during

his entire life, has been exceptionally

good, began to fall. He has been con

fined to his bed for the past five

weeks. The attending physician pro

nounces the cause for his ill health to

the infirmities of old age. His mind

remains clear and he rests well. If he lives, Mr, Van Dusen will be nine

ty-eight years old, May 9. With the exception of Walter Carpenter, he is

the oldest resident of the city.
