DAVIS HELD FOR THEFT Brakeman on C, C. & L. Is Alleged to Have Stolen Suit Case. BELONGED TO WM. VERNON DAVIS MAINTAINS THAT HE IS INNOCENT OF THE CHARGE, BUT THE EVIDENCE IS 'AGAINST HIM. , Alleging that George F. Davis stole a suit case belonging to him which he had left at the Adams Express company's office at Cincinnati, William Vernon, a brakeman on the C, C. & L. railroad, appeared at police headquarters yesterday and demanded the arrest of the man. Davis, who is also a brakeman on the C.. C, & L., was apprehended, but denies all knowledge of the theft, stoutly maintaining that he is innocent of the charge -when placed under the direction of the rapid fire questions to which he was subjected. Vernon claims that he left his suit case In the express office at Cincinnati over a week ago. He declares that he told Davis, who has a run out of Cincinnati, to call at the office when in the Queen City on April 1, and get the suit case for him, signing his (Vernon's) name to the receipt. Several days passed and as he heard nothing concerning the matter, Vernon inquired at the express office at Cincinnati, making the discovery that the suit case had been called for on April 1, and delivered over to a man who gave his name to the clerk as William Vernon. ' Davis was then located and asked if he had called for the suit case, but denied that he had visited the office of the Adams Express company at Cincinnati, and asserted that he knew nothing whatever concerning the matter. "Why, that's my necktie you've got oh now, that was in my suit .case, said Vernon who then went to police headquarters and explained the situation to Chief Gormon. The suit case contained two suits of new clothes and a quantity of other goods, the total being valued at about $40, it Is said. Davis will be returned to Cincinnati today, where an effort will be made to identify him by the clerk in the express office in that city, as the man representing himself to be William Vernon..
