Indianapolis Aviation Meet: Event Will Be One of the Largest Ever Held in This Country, and Wright Brothers Are to Participate.

P08T0FFICE DEPARTMENT AT WASHINGTON HAS BEEN A8KED TO PROBE THREAT MADE TO AN INDIANA MAN.

Princeton, Ind., March 30. Francisco, . seven miles east of here, is much wrought up about a letter received by Dr. D. H. Swan, cashier of the Francisco bank, demanding that $300 be. placed in a certain spot. Failure to comply is to result In the three little daughters of the banker, 2, 7 and 10 years old, being blinded and the father shot if he attempts the

capture or prosecution of the writers.

The letter, which is unsigned, has been placed in the hands of the post office authorities and the case is being worked on by. them. - The letter is written on cheap note paper with a lead pencil in a fairly good hand and is as follows: ' March 26, 1910. "Dr. Swan We have concluded to call on you for $300. Put the money at the telephone pole west of Mrs. Bilderback's house on the corner at 10:15 o'clock, night of March 30. Would prefer five, ten and twenty dollar bills. Put the money there and get away auick. Threatens Children.

; "If you don't comply with this request your children's eyes will be put out There are three of us, and if h any attempt Is made to arrest or prosecute us one or the other of us will get you when you least expect, by shooting. . "In the month of October you will get the money back the same way. A letter will notify you where to pick it up." The letter evidently had been drop- - ped In the Francisco post office box some time Sunday, but was not received by Swan until late Monday. It was not until yesterday that the facts became public. . Immediately upon receipt of the letter Postmaster Maxam was notified and he wired ; the' Washington post office authorities. . Residents Guard Youngsters. The Francisco citizens are Inclined to regard the matter seriously and precautions are ' being taken to protect the little girls. While the com-, m unity is a peaceable one, some very

ssfcv sw0 , uaiiv - vunou yna there in years past and it is not believed the writer of the letter intended it as a joke.' The opinion is that later letters will demand a larger amount of money. ; Dr. Swan recently retired from the medical profession to become cashier of the bank and he Is reputed to be quite .wealthy. There are no Italians in that vicinity and the letter Is not attributed to the Black Hand, but to a desperate effort of some person to extort money at the expense of the doctor's love for his children.

Indianapolis, March 30. Aviators are preparing and mastering aeroplanes for the first national meet to be held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during the week of June 13 to 18. On the outskirts of Montgomery, Alabama, a training school has been established for Wright pupils. They have five aeroplanes with which they are practicing and many of them will soon be Orville and Wilbur Wrights or Paulhams. - The method for training aviators as adopted by the Wrights is as unique

and practical as all of the achievements of these famous but pragmatical brothers. ( Orville .Wright Is at present occupying the role of instructor. The training machines are built, with double seats and a double set of levers for operating the aeroplane. - Seated with the operator the novice is placed beside the pilot and allowed to take bold : of the similar set of levers that control the machine. As each move , to alter the course of the craft Is made he is at once familiar

with its import and after several trials he is then permitted to guide the craft from his set of levers, and in case he makes a false move the instructor seated beside him at once corrects it with his more skillful and practiced hand. This is a much more satisfactory way than letting an operator try his first machine ' . with no practice

whatever, and then when In the air learn by his' own judgment and at great hazard just how to guide it. In addition to the many fully equipped aeroplanes on the grounds, there are also several gliders for the first preliminary war. ' These ' are

launched from the hillsides and used by those becoming familiar, with the first rudiments of aviation. ',

Twenty-five pupils are being select

ed by Roy Knabenshue, . the famous

pilot of dirigible craft, who is managing for the Wrights the Wright Exhibition Co. To qualify for the position of aviator it is first necessary that the applicants have a thorough knowledge

of a gasoline motor, then the habits of

the pupil must be all that Is desired, after which appearance is the next essential.

The Wrights are selecting the finest team of young men in the country, realizing that their reputation as well

as those of the pilots, will suffer by

Improper selection. From ten to fifteen of the promising pupils are now

on the grounds "taking lessons and mastering the intricate evolutions. They are quartered right, on the

grounds, and have reading and lecture rooms, where everything pertaining to aerial flight is discussed. Ten proficient aviators will be ready for championship, contests on or before May 15, .when from' five to eight of the' machines will be sent to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway where the events of 1910 will be held. All trials made at the, Speedway will be in private, excepting those for the press, until the date for the contest, June 13 to 18, when America's

first licensed meet will take place. Wilbur Wright is spending his time at the Dayton ' plant preparing machines for the coming contest for the season of 101O.
