WAS ERECTED BY SPANISH WITU'BlMiun "At- wit r PALACE . THERE DEPARTS ONE OF FEW REMNANTS OF AN- . XIENT ARCHITECTURE. (American &wa Servii) San Antonio Texas, March 25. After httving been in situ since 1735. the etone and mortar of the Veramendi Palace will be used in the construction or a modern ten story office building Instead of hearing the gasconades of Spanish - conquestadores and the dolce voices or senorltas they will hereafter listen to the click of typewriters and the giggle of she who works them. No more will they look upon proud Done from far Hlspano, armed cap-a-pie and encased In helmet, visor, doublet and cuirass, for hereafter twentieth century business men with green ties, pink socks, ") pigeon-toed shoes and padded garments will be their only companies. Before the stones get that far, however, they will be put through the mill and made of the size used in conetone of excellent quality and well adapted for their future mission. With the Veramendi Palace passes one of the best known architectural remains of Spanish-American civilization. It was erected almost simultaneously with the Mission San Antonio deT Valero, now the Alamo, and for many years was the white house of the Spanish province of Bexar, a territory comprising all of Texas. In those days, however, it was merely known as the governor's house, a description more suitable than Veramendi Palace. The latter name it received because of its occupancy by the last Mexican governor of Texas. Where It Was Located. The building stood in Soledad street, Its site marking formerly the northeastern corner of a large public square, the center of which was occupied by the plaza des armas of San Fernando presidio. In its rear was a big garden which extended to the banks of the San Antonio river, the whole, house and garden, being at one time surrounded with a very strong palisade and deep ditches. It was no common thing to have the Indians make raids right in the city in those days and for that reason defenses of that kind were necessary. The old building was the scene of many a romance of love and murder. Almost in its shadow a Mexican general caused to be butchered like pigs a number of Spanish and other prisoners who had been unfortunate enough to side with the Spanish government during the Mexican revolution. The description of this scene, picturing the assassin as he whetted the knife on the soles of his shoes everytime he had slit the throat of a prisoner, forms one of the most stirring chapters In Texas history. In the , Mevamendi Palace Ben IMilas met his end at the assassin's hand and in its patio and the shaded walks of Its gardens, James Bowie, designer of the famous knife bearing his names courted ' and won Ursula Vera

The comet is now in the constellation of Pisces, more commonly called the constellation of fishes, 100,000,000 miles from the earth, and according to Rev. Father Martin Brennan, famous astronomer of the St. Louis university, can-be seen with a pair of opera glasses, provided there is no mist In the skies. In three weeks the comet will be visible to the naked eye. A curtain of mist around the earth hid the comet from view Monday night. To find the great square of Pegasus is an easy task for even the most inexperienced of astronomers, according to Father Brennan. Train your glasses to a trifle above the reflection of the setting sun ind there you will find the comet. The comet appears shortly before 7 o'clock and remains visible until 10 o'clock. "The earth wil pass through the tail of Halley's comet, which is 14,000,000 miles long, but will not be noticeably affected by it," says Rev. Father Charropping, S. J., of St. Louis university. "We have been watching and studying the comet for the last three weeks," said Father Charropping, "since it was first discovered by Prof. Cloud, in the western sky, near the horizon. It will

As the comet approaches the sun the length of time it will be visible each night will gradually decrease until it passes around the sun. It will then be visible before sunrise. The comet will be nearest to the earth's path May 18. It will then be between the earth and the sun. This comet was first established as a periodical visitor by Edmund Halley, an English astronomer, August 10, 1682, who predicted that it would reappear March 12, 1759. He died before that time and the comet appeared a month later than the time he had predicted. It appeared again in 1835, and when it disappears this time it will not be seen again for 75 years.
