Late statistics show that the honey and wax industry of the United States has an annual value of $23,000,000, while it is esti mated that the capital invested in the business totals $100,000,000. The number of those who keep bees and produce honey for market in any quantity Is placed at 275.000, while the number of those who keep a hive or two to supply sweets for the family is very large. These are the tangible assets of the bee business. Another service bees render doubtless far in excess of the value of the honey they produce Is that of the fertilizing of many varieties of fruit blossoms, vegetables, certain clovers and alfalfa. In spite of the statement so often made that there will be a serious overproduction of apples if the planting of new orchards continues at the present rate there seems to be slight ground for apprehension in view of the statistics of apple production for the past fourteen years. This cry of overproduction was raised as long ago as the fifties and sixties, but the dire prophecy has never materialized. In spite of the rapid increase of population there has been a marked decrease in apple production during the past fourteen years, doubtless largely due to inroads of Insects and fungous pests, exhausted soils, unfavorable " climatic conditions and general carelessness and neglect To those who have thought oa the matter the following figures will be significant There may be an overproduction of apples some time, bat this doesn't look like it: Tear. W.," care Palladium. 10-7t KILLED BY A HORSE Word has been recived by Mrs. Charles Lamb of South Fourteenth street of the accidental death of her father, John C. Smith at Selma, Indiana, yesterday. Mr. Smith was kicked to death by a 3-year-old colt and his body horribly mutilated, was found in the stall with the animal by the man's son, Raymond, about 9 o'clock yesterday morning. His neck) had been broken and his face, arms and body were covered with cuts and bruises made by the infuriated animal. Mrs. Payton Bly, of Southwest Third street, this city, is also a daughter of the deceased. Mr. Smith was 75 years' of age. Two other daughters survive, Mrs. Elizabeth Puckett, of Muncie, and Mrs. Arthur Shidler, of Shidler, Indiana. A Pauper Artist. In a museum attached to two almshouses at Kirkleatham, England. Is a wonderful carving of St. George and the dragon out of a single block of boxwood, the work of a poor Inmate, ind it is valued at 2.000. It Is said that this piece of carving was the cause of a wager being once laid In a dispute as to Its entirety. To prove that the work was one single piece of carving It was plunged into a pot of boiling oil and allowed to remain for hours. All doubts were set at rest when It was withdrawn and found to be still complete. The person who completed this marvelous piece of work used an ordinary penknife only. While intoxicated the man visited the coliseum and attaching a pair of rollers to hte unruly feet thought that perhaps in that manner he would be able to navigate with a greater degree of success. However, Minor's feet didn't like the experiment and went bad on him at the start. After bumping into everybody on the floor of the rink and making his presence generally undesirable, the man was hauled in by Officer Ed Tiernan and taken to headquarters. He was fined $1 and costs this morning. REV. SCH DEAD Word has been t received by the Rev. F. A. Roell of the St. Andrew's church of the death of the Rev. Anthony Schenk of the St. Michael's Catholic church at Brookville, Ind. The deceased had visited in Richmond frequently. The last time that he was here was on November 30, 1909, when he held high mass at the St. Andrew's church. I He was 61 years of age. The Rev. Mr. Schenk was born In Posey county and was well known over the state. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him and had accomplished a great work at Brookville. Visitors to Glen Miller Park, on Sunday, are invited by Superintendent Ed Hollern, to inspect the greenhouses, and also the quarters of the animals, which are confined indoors during the colder months of the year. There were a number of visitors at the Glen yesterday and all were invited into the greenhouses and all expressed much astonishment at -the amount of work being done in preparation for the different flower beds in the city parks this summer. Heretofore, the public has not been privileged to inspect the greenhouses. Tennyson's Early Poems. Tennyson was only eight years old when be covered both sides of his brother's slate with a poem on "Flowers," done In unimpeachable meter. These were the only finished poems of Tennyson's boyhood, bat when about fourteen or fifteen yean old he commenced a drama in iambic meter which still survives. Although the members of the house have been resting after the terrific strain of the war on Cannon, many conferences between leaders of both, factions have boon held, and the probable members of the new rules committer are already being picked. "Dope" on Committee. The wiseacres, although admitting that it is early to make any definite predictions, agree to a large extent on choosing Representative Dalzell of Pennsylvania, dose friend of Cannon. and Represetative Smith ot Iowa, to keep their places on the committee. Champ Clark, the democratic leader, is also regarded as being likely to retain his place. Another incumbent, howex er. Representative Fitzgerald. iDeni.) of Brooklyn, is in doubt, and a fight is exected before it will be decided whether or not he retains his position. Smith, of Ohio, on the present committee, is by many regarded as one ot the assured members of the enlarged body. A tentative slate, iiih has met with much favor; incAides Mr. Olmstead of Pennsylvania: Mr. Ellis of Oregon, a regular of Rooseveltian inclinations: Mr. McCall ot Massachusetts, and Mr. Gardner of Massachusetts, a mild insurgent Talk of Underwood Besides Champ Clark, for the democrats, and Fitzgerald, who Is now In doubt, the democrats moat likely talk- -ed of for places on the committee are Mr. Underwood ot Alabama and Mr. Shirley of Kentucky. . Underwood Is Champ Clark's right hand man. and Shirley is one ot the most prominent of the younger democrats in the house. The chairmanship of tbe committee is most in doubt. Dalzell. If he gets the honor, will have to win It in the face of strong opposition from the insurgents, it Is expected.- His relations to Cannon are such that he Is In little favor with the radicals. Mr; Smith of Ohio, is also the object of tentative opposition as head of the committee. The chairmanship Is now regarded as a position of equal Importance with the Speakership. The change In the organization of the house has made the head of the rule committee a possible dictator, to a certain extent, and In the view of many of he leaders, the position will jilUmately be the center of battling such as has gone on for three years between the rebels and the speaker.
