SATURDAY INVESTIGATING THE DYNAMITE OUTRAGES OF THE PREVIOUS NIGHT STRIKE END NOT VISIBLE.
(American New Service) . Philadelphia, March 19. E. E. Greenawalt. president of the State
Federation of Labor today began preparations to call a state-wide general strike of 1,000,000 workers for Monday morning. Although President Greenawalt had not definitely decided on this course, it was declared that only an immediate promise of peace could avert the hastening of the state etrike. President Greenawalt today disclaimed all responsibility on the part of the strikers for the violence of yesterday. "That can only do our cause harm," he declared. The attempts to dynamite two cars last night one at Coral and Dauphin street and another at Thirty-first street and Columbia avenue today were the subjects of close investigation by the police. The situation today showed a firmer deadlock than had met the interests working for a settlement since the beginning of the car strike. The Philadelphia Rapid Transit company has outlined the terms on which it will accept peace, and C. O. Pratt, international organizer of the carmen, has declared that the men will not return to work on those terms. More conferences were held today, but the result announced was the same and the prospects of halting the great industrial war throughout the state appeared more meager than ever. Conditions of Company. The car company is willing to take back the men on these conditions: It will re-employ nearly all, but no( the 173 whoso discharge brought on the strike. It will give preference
to former employes, but will insist
on receiving complaints from individuals or committees representing "any
organization" of its employes. It
will make no concession in regard to
a wage scale, Insisting on the 23-cent schedule to go into effect July 1,
which - was agreed upon before the - strike. On the other hand, the strike leaders demand, as the only conditions of the return of the men a 25-cent an hour scale; the reinstatement of all men on strike, and an agreement to protect the life of the union. However, W. D. Hahon, international president of the Carmen's organization, today declared that if it were .found that the 173 discharged men had lost their positions for genuine reasons, and not. merely because of . their membership in the union, the
strikers would not support them. The strike leaders today continued their preparations for the strike vote to be taken by all the unions In the state. It was declared, however, that the calling of the general state strike before the expected time would not be an unexpected move.

St Louis, Mo., March 19. Elmer E
Von Vleet of Elmira, N. Y., a student: of social economy, has gone to his home to collect a wager of $10,000; made two years ago, that he could save 400 in twenty-four months while working as a day laborer. A. V. Mekeel, proprietor of the Elmira Courier, is the loser in the wager. He admitted his defeat in a telegram to Von Vleet Monday, when the winner notified him that his bank account now totaled $459. The wager followed an argument between the two men, Mekeel maintaining that a young man of today without special training has no chance to have money. Von Vleet started out with a pocket knife and $5. Under an assumed name, "Elmer Gray," he worked as a laborer in Columbus and Cincinnati, O., and Aurora, 111., finally drifting to St. Louis, where he held three jobs. The latest job was his best place, driving a milk wagon at $40 a month. He held eleven jobs during the two years and says but two of his employers "treated him like a white man." His shortest tenure of a job was in Cincinnati, where he auit after work
ing one day in a restaurant when he saw the cook wiping her nose on a dish cloth.

Hedgehogs. Hedgehogs are : very strong In the water, swimming with ease against a rapid stream, and with their muscular claws they turn up the nests of trout or salmon and make a goodly haul therefrom. They will breast a very rapid stream, and cold water, as near the freezing point as may be, seems to have do terror for them. The eggs of the salmouidae are a welcome prey to nearly every animal that will face water. Aquatic birds, rats (both bouse and water), hedgehogs, beetles and their larvae, the so called fresh water shrimp, are deadly foes. London Mail.

Live Mouse Jumps Out of Girl's "Rat" While at Breakfast Table.
CAUSED MUCH EXCITEMENT
Tipton, Ind., March 19. A new set of china will have to be bought for use in the home of one of Tipton's wealthy citizens because a live mouse made its appearance in the hair of the daughter of the family and jumped down on the breakfast table. The girl's father had put out poison for mice. A mouse ate some of it and crawled into the "rat." He did not eat quite enough to kill him. but he was paralyzed for the time. In the morning when the young woman was awakened by the arrival of one of her girl friends she dressed hurriedly and did not examine the "rat" closely before putting it on. While the family were at breakfast the mouse recovered from the effects of the poison and jumped from the "rat" to the table. The table was overturned in the excitement and every dish was broken.
