A number of interesting documents recovered from an outlaw's hut. among them a letter written by General U. S. Grant during the siege of Vicksburg, were received here today. The Grant letter was addressed to General Parks, and conveyed orders relative to the operations in front of the Confederate stronghold. The other papers are supposed to have been stolen from General Manuel Garcia, of the Mexican army. That the documents had been se creted in the hotel for many years were shown by their condition and by the further fact that the hut, a dilapidated old abode near Ferris. . was abandoned when the railroad supplanted the stage line on the run between Los Angeles and San Diego. Sergeant Sebastian, of the police department, received the letters from a friend, who found -them hidden in a crevice of the shanty. The papers will be turned over to a historical association.. He smiled as he spoke, as though the suggestion was entirely new and entirely unexpected and failed to prove tempting. He would have nothing to say for or against the proposal of a convention nomination of a senator. LOCAL LODGE AT EATON. Eaton, March IS. The Explorers Forced Him to Lead Tham to Water. A party of explorers, four In number, were traveling across tbe sandy plains of Western Australia. They had been struggling on for weeks and were now greatly In need of water. Tbelr two camels bad not bad any water to drink for nearly a fortnight. After a time they came to a deserted camp hidden among some trees. While .they were looking at tbe still smoldering campflres they were startled by some dreadful yells, and a shower of spears, thrown by a number of black savages, came flying about them. This made the travelers so angry that they rushed after tbe blacks, who fled in all directions. After a stern chase they found one of the savages up a tree. As be would not come down, one of tbe travelers climbed the tree after him. Presently a branch of the tree gave way, and they both came tumbling down, but without hurting themselves much. Tbe travelers asked the black man where they could And some water, but he would not say. Then they tried to get friendly with him and gave him some food. But, although be enjoyed the food, he would not tell them where water was to be found. Then one of them had an Idea. He took some tinned meat, mixed Into it a handful of salt and gave It to the hungry savage. The black soon cleared it up and seemed to enjoy It. much to tbe amusement of the travelers. Then they sat down and waited. In about an hour the savage began to get fidgety and wanted to leave them, but they would not let him go. Presently he began to wail: "Water! Waterr Jumping up. be ran to the densest part of the scrub, followed by the white men. Clearing away some twigs, he revealed a hidden pool of clear water. That is the way the spring was discovered.
