Things the Motorist Wants to Know

An Emergency Radiator Repair. After emptying and drying the tank, carefully clean and scrape the metal around the leaky part and gently heat with a torch flame, being sure that the heat is not enough to melt the solder. While hot, paint over the leak with a spirit paint. The heat causes the paint to dry immediately in and around the crack; when quite hard, again gently heat, without causing the paint to blister, and repaint. A perfectly impervious coat has now been formed; but this is not strong enough by itself to bear the weight of the water from within, so coat over with two good layers of a linseed oil paint, allowing to dry, cold. Place for Tire Valve Caps. Never allow a tire valve to remain uncovered; if the cap be lost, secure by a piece of leather or rag and a rubber band or string round the stem. If dirt is allowed to enter, a leaky valve is bound to result. A Simple Carbon Remover. A good cylinder cleaning mixture to keepn the garage is made by adding a packet of soft soap to a gallon of soft water. Pour a little of this from an oil can into the auxiliary air valve (a small stream but not sufficient to stop the engine) for the last two minutes before stopping. This will clean the cylinder of carbon and save taking apart. Experience shows that if an alkaline solution, preferably containing a little fatty matter such as soap is brought into contact with carbon deposit at high temperatures, the deposit is disintegrated. Cheap Insulating Varnish. Sealing wax dissolved in gasoline makes quite a good varnish for ter

minals. A little linseed oil stirred in will prevent brittleness.

If You Have no Emery Cloth. If a car driver has neglected to carry emery paper or a file and the spark plugs need cleaning, a substitute can be found in the igniting composition on a box of safety matches. This can be used in the same manner as the emery paper, and while not

quite as good, will effectively clean the ends of the plugs. Do You Ever Get Them Dirty? If you wish to have presentable looking hands, before starting to work on a piece of greasy machinery, take some cylinder oil and rub it well into the skin. After the work is done, to take the grime off do not rub the hands with waste and work the dirt into the pores, but apply fresh cylinder oil, or any light oil, liberally, using it the same as soap and water. When all of the grease has been cut loose, take a clean piece of waste or rag and wipe off the hands. When you have wiped off the oil you will find most of the grime has gone with it, leaving the hands in good shape to wash with soap and water. The soap used in finishing up should be tar soap, and the motorist who tries this system will be greatly surprised at the results obtained. Kerosene, gasoline, washing powders or compounds should not be used, since they harden the skin and make it crack. Especially is this true where it is used several times a day, as in the repair shops. When out on the road the hands can be made fairly presentable by using the oil wash alone and drying them off thoroughly with waste. Most repair men are well acquainted with

the foregoing hand wash, but the man

who has had trouble in getting off the heavy black grease which he will get in making repairs and adjustments on his own car, will find that it will beat anything in the way of ordinary soaps and compounds. To Stop Vibrator Pitting. The motorist can reduce very greatly the rate of wear of his coil vibrator points by periodically reversing the direction of current flew through the system. Another Leak Repairer. When a small hole develops in the water pipe system, drill and tap the hole, then apply a machine screw cut short enough to prevent its interference with the flow through the pipe. This same practice may be followed with slight leaks in the radiator if in such place that a screw can be applied. Under the head of a machine screw should be placed a leather washer or a good thick coat of iron cement before it is screwed down tight. When Windshields Gets Clouded. It may be noted that a remedy is supposed to be at hand in a cake of dry castile soap, which, if rubbed over the surface of the glass and then polished off with a dry silk handkerchief, is stated to have the effect of preventing the deposition of moisture on the surface for some considerable time.
