EDITOR HOLT TO OELieLECTOBE Chief Editorial Writer of "Independent" Will Speak in Richmond. IS A NOTED JOURNALIST
FOR THIRTEEN YEARS HE HAS BEEN MANAGING EDITOR OF THE GREAT NEW YORK PAPER COMES TO EARLHAM.
On next Monday evening, March 14th, Richmond will have an opportunity to hear Mr. Hamilton Holt, managing editor of the New York Independent. The many readers of the Independent know already the high rank the paper holds in the files of journalism, and the great part it plays in moulding public opinion in the United States, but it is not likely that many Know who the men are that have made the paper what it is. Mr. Holt has been for thirteen years the managing editor of this paper and his literary work within that time ha3 been confined chiefly to the writing of editorials. He has, however, been an
occasional contributor to other periodicals besides the Independent, and has
found time to prepare for publication
some other works, among which are "Commercialism and Journalism" and
"Undistinguished Americans." Americans." An Interesting Lecture.
His lecture, "The Federation of the
World," which will be given on next Monday evening, at Earlham College, has been delivered at colleges and universities from Yale to Lenland Stanlord Jr. It is illustrated by stereopti-
con slides from photographs, cartoons
and old Dutch prints secured by Mr. Holt, while in Europe and holds the
interest and attention of a popular au dience from beginning to end.
The expense of bringing Mr. Holt to
Richmond is heavy, but the necessary
amount has been subscribed by mem
bers of the faculty of Earlham College and other citizens of Richmond, so
that no charge for admission will be
made.
FIGHT THE HATPIN
BAD FOR ECZEMA
Water Frequently Aggravates Skin
Trouble. In certain inland European districts
where water Is seldom used for bath
ing purposes the people are almost immune from skin affections. The
best authorities now agree that soap and water are to be avoided in the treatment of skin diseases, particular
ly eczema when present in the scalp or on the feet, as water is an irritant, and when not actually the cause of the disease, at least aggravates it. For this reason prescriptions put up in liquid or soap form, or containing grease or alcohol, have always failed.
The new skin remedy, poslam, is a
flesh-colored ointment, containing no grease. Under its directions soap and
water are forbidden. It may be used
on the tender skin of infants with
soothing and beneficial effect, and in eczema cases stops the itching immediately, rapidly restoring the skin to
its normal condition.
Every druggist keeps both the 50-
cent size (for minor troubles) and the
$2 jar, and either of these may be ob
tained at W. H. Sudhoff's, as well as other reliable drug stores.
But no one is even asked to pur
chase poslam without first obtaining
a sample package, which will be sent by mail, free of charge, upon request, by the Emergency Laboratories, 32

shown so much eccentricity in their
personal adornment as at present," he said. "We have had the tight skirt, the sheath gown, the marcel wave, and now comes the yard wide hat with its remarkable accessories. In addition to ribbons, laces, wires, flowers, vegetables, animals and birds, women's headgear is armed with the dealy snickersee. "If women care to wear carrots and roosters on their heads, that is a mat
ter of their own concern and it cannot be interfered with by the city, but when it comes to wearing swords they must be stopped. One man told me he was almost decapitated in the city
hall elevator by the sweep of a hat pin
like scimeter worn by one of the city
hall belles. In the street cars people
are in danger of losing their eyes by
sitting beside some lovely devotee of
the fashions.
"The hat pin may be the only weapon
woman has to ward off attack, but let
her wear it sheathed in her belt. Hid

comes under the designation of con cealed weapons."
There were more "Boos" from the
women and the committee sent its in

At Local Theaters
A GOOD ATTRACTION Whitney Bros, at the Gennett Make a Big Hit. The Whitney Musical Comedy company introduced us to two very clever comedians last evening at the Gennett in "The Ruler of the Town." S. Tutt Whitney, the leading comedian reminds us forcibly of Williams, the famous colored comedian, while J. Homer Tutt, his partner is an excellent successor to Walker. Their methods are much the same and on the whole, their entire performance is quite as good as anything the more famous players of their race have ever given us. The chorus is bright and keep things going with a lively pace when the two comedians are not on the stage, aDd when
they are, there a continual scream. Whitney has a spontaneous humor of
his own which is quite captivating and his hearers hang on his next words with an attention which is truly merited. Tonight's bill will be "The Star of Zanzibar," while tmorrow they will repeat "The Ruler of the Town," and give the only performance of "The ExPresident of Liberia" at night.
Vogel, who has acquired recognition for the advancement and further development of minstrelsy, receiving the praise and steadfast financial support of all lovers of amusement. This famous organization will be seen at the Gennett next Saturday matinee and night A grand and imposing free spectacular street parade will be given on that day at noon.
COLLEGE AERO MEET.
Chicago Councilmen Will Ord
er the Dangerous Weapon Sheathed.
Chicago, 111., March 8. Women's
long hat pins were declared to be
"public nuisance," and an "anti-hat
pin" ordinance was ordered drawn up by the judiciary committee of the city
council. The action followed a week's crusade against the hat pin. which culminated today in a public hearing. The ordinance will stipulate that hat pins worn in public places "shall not extend more than one-half inch beyond the crown of the hat.' It is to be drawn up by the corporation counsel and presented for action by the city council next Monday night. Nine aldermen, three or four lawyers and a score of protesting women were present at the public hearing. "We want to protest right here against this attempt to regulate women's attire," declared Attorney Francis Hinckley, representing the women. "It does not become the city of Chicago to try to dictate what its women shall wear." "That's right," said Miss Nan E. Davis, interrupting her counsel. "These hat pins are women's only means of defense. You must not dictate to us women." "Well, you women want to regulate what we men drink, don't you?" interposed Alderman Cermak.
Amid a chorus of "Boos" from fe
male voices. Alderman Herman J. Bauler, who started the agitation in the
council, stepped forward and describ
ed what he called "The truth about the whole hat pin situation."

Graustark. Geo. D. Baker's dramatization of
Graustark" which has been approved
by George Barr McCutcheon. the famous author of the novel, will again be presented in this city at the Gennett Friday evening. This is the same organization which has met, and is still meeting with much unprecedented success in all the large cities throughout the country.
Presenting a play of more than or
dinary interest to theater-goers, clean and wholesome, with interesting love
stories, brilliant comedy lines, with
a plot of intensity; augmented by a company of players all favorably cast, and with a scenic investure of massive and magnificent productions of the lo
cale of "Graustark," should prove a magnet in drawing patrons of the theater to the Gennett when the organization appears there.
PARIS FLOOD AT MURRAY.
Good Bill This Week at the Popular
Play House. The motion picture this week at the
Murray is certainly a timely topic as it graphically represents the French
metropolis during the recent big flood. Sun's Singing Four is the head-
liner this week and .is a popular musi
cal number as there is harmony and
expression as well as excellent voices in the organization. May Evans in imitation and whistling comes in for
a full share of the applause which
greets all the acts this week. The
comedy acrobats, Ehrendall Bros, and
Dutton, presenting "Bits from Circus
dom" are certainly amusing as well as
interesting as they put on some excel
lent stunts. And then there is that
comedy playlet, "Wanted An In
structor," presented by Mr. and Mrs.
Chas. A. Murray, which cannot help but please and the many acquaintances of Mr. Murray are glad to have the opportunity of seeing him in this vi
cinity again. As Jerry, Archibald
Brobson and Obediah Kirk he is much In evidence and no one objects to his frequent appearances in the act as in each part he is very much at home. The big bill is certainly drawing the
big crowds. Go with the crowd to the
Murray and enjoy a hearty laugh.
John W. Vogel's Minstrels.
John W. Vogel's Big City Minstrels
have reached the highest summit of
perfection, towering above all similar attractions, a monument to the march
of progressive minstrel enterprise.
It is unequalled, conducted on a
broad and liberal basis, the company
containing the leading lights of minstrelsy, the very cream of laugh pro
ducers, and the pick of high class
novelty entertainers, presenting a program entirely different to all other minstrel organizations and a welcome relief from the old and threadbare
methods so long in use by similar en
terprises. The public's wants have been carefully considered by Manager

The Car That Has Demonstrated Its Power On the Kansas City Mills, Where They re From Missouri and Have To Be Shown. Kansas City, Mo., March 6, 1910. George W. Davis Carriage Co., Richmond, Ind. . Gentlemen: The car you shipped us which we had on exhibition at the Automobile Show, from March 1st to 5th, we sold to A. D. BIRCH of McPherson, Kan., providing that we could satisfy him in a demonstration which we could not make until this morning. The first hill we tackled is the worst in the city, being a slope of 22 degrees, and we easily made the hill on high gear at a speed of 25 miles per hour, as shown by the speedometer on the car. Mr. Birch was astonished by the power this car develops and was highly pleased in every other way, and immediately made settlement with us and started for his home at 10 a. m., a 200 mile run from Kansas City. Please express him one inner tube and a dust hood for the top, for which he will remit to you promptly on receipt of them.' Please make shipment immediately of 3 more cars as per our contract. Yours truly, x RAY HISTED MOTOR CAR CO.
