ARREST RICH WOMAN

Wife of a Wealthy German in Custody for Writing to an Actor.

EPISTLES STRANGE ONES

(Special Cable from the International News Service.) Berlin, March 5, The wife of one of Berlin's merchant princes, who occupied one of the most prominent positions in society in the capital, was arrested recently for writing letters of an extraordinary character to Giuseppe Guampietro, the actor. At the police station she was questioned at length, and vehemently declared her innocence, but finally she broke down and made a full confession that she was the author of the letters, which numbered many hundreds, and that she had been led to write them by her passionate love of the actor, who ignored her. The woman and her husband had been associated on terms of friendship with the actor and his wife for three or four years, and the letters began to arrive a few months after the beginning of their acquaintance. Some time later the letters were succeeded by scurrilous postcards. As many as eight cards arrived in a day. The actor appealed to the police for protection, and some of the most expert detectives were entrusted with the solution of the mystery. It was evident from the contents of the letters that they were written by some one well acquainted with the actor, his circle of friends and his mode 01 life. The letters offered no clue because the writing was carefully disguised. . Ultimately, careful observations revealed that this woman was friendly with a shop girl, w-ho posted the letters for her. Detection finally ensued and the woman was seen walking along the street with the shop girl, to whom she had given a letter. The girl was in the act of dropping the letter In a postbox when she was seized by detectives, who arrested her and also the merchant's wife. The perpetrator is forty years of age, has been married eighteen years,. and is the mother ot three children.

PROVES ITS WORTH

(Special Cable from the International News Service.) London, March 5. What Is believed to be the first occasion on which the identity of a dead man has been established by means of the fingerprint system now in use by the police, occurred recently at Slough. ' The body of a man was found on the Great Western Railway, near Taplow, in a badly mutilated condition, portions of the remains being found some distance from the body. There was nothing on the body to lead to identification, and the coroner's jury returned a verdict of "Found dead on the line."

Meanwhile Superintendent Pearman

of Slough, took the dead man's finger prints, a gruesome task, as one of the arms was completely severed from the trunk. The prints were sent to Scotland Yard, and there they were immediately identified as those of a man named Downes, of Deal.
