CROWD WITNESSED WORK
WATER RUSHING THROUGH A PIPE THREATENED TO EXTERMINATE ONE OF FLOCK. BUT. TIDE WAS STEMMED. New York. March 4. English spa p. rows by a remarkable engineering feat rescued a wounded member of their flock from death by drowning in a water pipe leading from a gutter oa the roof of a plana at the home of Er nest T. Lopenny, Valley road. Upper Montclair. X. J. Lopenny and his wife vouch for the story. Besides, th feat took place and the tale was told on the anniversaary of the birth of the great exemplar of truth. With such evidence none could doubt the story. It happened that one sparrow, crip pled so it could not fly. fell from a tree onto the piazza roof and rolled to the gutter. Immediately a conference of birds was called, and while first aid measures were under discussion a heavy downpour filled the gutter and the injured bird vanished in the pipe leading to the ground. Was Time for Action. It was time for action, not words. so the meeting adjourned and the bird reserves were summoned. Some of the bolder sparrows started down the spout, but, larking experience lo mine work, gave it up and gathered about the mouth of the shaft. Others flew to the ground end of the spout, but the young Niagara there made res cue by that route Impossible. It became apparent that the Impris oned bird was wedged in at the bend of the pipe. A hasty consultation, then the whole flock sat down in the gutter, damming the water. Soon the gutter filled, the water rising to the neck of the birds: then, at a signal the spar rows all hopped out together and the great flood of water filled the pipe to overflowing, raising ' the imprisoned bird to the crest, and it fell to the ground. Lopenny and his wife witnessed the entire affair from a window of their home. WHEAT LOOKS GOOD Yield of Eighty Per Cent of the Crop Sown in the County Is Expected. STATEMENT BY RATL1FF Wayne county farmers report that the wheat has come through the wint er in promising condition and indications point to an unusually heavy yield for this year. The heavy falls of snow has kept the wheat well protected, it is. said, and the outlook Is extremely flattering. Walter S. Ratliff. who Is recognised as an authority on matters pertaining to agriculture, stated that Indications are for a wheat yield of eighty per cent of the average. He declares that there is no evidence of the fly In wheat, sown since September 25th, but that wheat sown prior to that data bears some evidence of infection. Wheat sown in open fields is In much better condition than that sown in corn, it is said. Clover Is also In fine condition and the acreage promises to be larger than last year according 99 reports. Almanacs. .It Is still contended by many authorities that the almanac of 14S7 was the first specimen of printing, and It has been variously credited to Gutenberg. Schaeffer and Pfister of Bamberg. Dr. Faustus, celebrated In legend, whose strange story has been immortalized by Marlowe and Goethe, was the accredited author of almanacs containing astrological signs (retained at the present day) and necromantic secrets.
