Phone 2394. 2-tf "SPRIG HAS CUB" GRIPPITES SAY And All the Signs of the Happy Season Were in Evidence Today. SMALL BOY AND MARBLES WOMEN GAPING AT EASTER HATS AND A WARM SUN HAIL THE APPROACH OF THE NEAR SUMMER SEASON. "Sprig has cub" (articulation of la grippe.) " When you hear the small boy shout, "first shoot for keeps" the first thing in getting out of the hot stuffy school room, where he sat in idle dreams for several hours; when you see the Johnny-jump ups and dandelions poking their noses through the friendly, folds of Mother Earth, whose protection has sheltered them through the severity of a hard winter, and when women begin to stop in front of the millinery stores and discuss their Easter hats why the need of a ther mometer to tell one that the glad springtime has arrived, for its a safe bet that its here. "With all the gentleness of the most gentle lamb, March was ushered in yesterday, and today was even more pleasant than yesterday. The mercury lingered around the vicinity of the 70 degree mark this afternoon. Over coats and furs vere carried ' to the closet. The chirp of the robin and blue bird was a pleasant sound and made double the assurance that spring had really come at last. The warmer weather is welcomed by everyone with open arms. It is really a pleasure to venture out of doors again without an overcoat and still feel comfortable. Even the flies are arriving and announce the presence of spring by buzzing idly on the window panes. In fact all signs point to the arrival of the most pleasant time of the year, but the old saying is that w hen March conies in like a Iamb it goes out like a lion, and you never can tell what a difference just a few days will make. And No More Hungarian Partridges or Mongolian Pheasants Will Be Distributed to Game Preserves.
No more Hungarian partridges or Mongolian pheasants will be distributed for stocking game preserves in Indiana this spring save where promises have been made, and even then some of the promises will have to be cut down a little. S ate Fish and Game Commissioner Z. T. Sweeney, of Columbus, has announced that he will be unable to get as many of the imported game birds as he had ordered and he will be unable to fill any additional orders. He has been getting POLICE KEPT BUSy Chief of Police Gormon and Sergeant McXally have been kept busy during the past two days answering telephone calls by persons inquiring if it is all right to subscribe for the "Woman's World" through the agent who has called at their house. Since the arrest of H. R. Royer, who illegally represented himself to be the authorized agent for the magazine, the people are somewhat skeptical about taking out subscriptions and the numerous authorized agents who are now making a canvass of the city, soliciting subscriptions, are greatly handicapped in their work. W. G. Harris, manager of the circulation department for this state, who was responsible for Royer's apprehension, desires that it be made public that; any one taking out a subscription for the "Woman's World" now .will receive the magazine as ordered. v ; The first denatured alcohol plant to bo built west of the. Mississippi river Is located at iiarsualltown, la., and Btarts up Feb. 1. The outfit consists of seven buildings and will cost completed $140,000. Operating day and night. It will have a capacity of 8,000 gallons of alcohol, which will consume 3,200 bushels of corn daily. The output will be pure grain or ethyl alcohol, and the denaturing agent, which must be mixed with it to make It unfit for drinking purposes, will be added as required. A force of twenty men, including four government Inspectors, will operate the plant. One of the chief points in favor of plants of this character is that grain that Li partly spoiled for use as food may be used In the manufacture of the product. Flants properly equipped eta also utilize frosted potatoes, fruit, etc. In fact; any product which has a starchy content. Hoit i-s a iviefiicine. Few birds, except the missel thrush when sharp set, ever touch holly berries, which are "violently (emetic' and remain on the bushes for months. Our intemperate ancestors wsed to swallow holly berries after Christmas to cure the effects of their gargantuan festivities. Years ago some French physician pronounced a decoction of holly leaves or an extract from the bark called "illclne". to be superior to quinine as a tonic. Owing to commercial and other difficulties the boom died away, and "ilicine" no longer appears in. the materia medics. London Mail.

But a letter to Commissioner Sweeney from his importers in Philadephia states that his last order for birds has been cut from 3,800 to 2.800 and that no more can be furnished for some time. Indiana was the first state in the Union to establish game preserves among the farmers, such as are found in Bartholomew and neighboring counties. Commissioner Sweeney decided five or six years ago that the game preserve idea in which several farmers would join and sign an agreement to keep their lands closed to hunters for a period of three years would be a good way to solve the problem of the rapidly disappearing quail and that it would also be a good chance to introduce a species of game bird that was hardier and larger than the quail, so that if, weather conditions, etc., did kill off the quail, then the imported bird could be gaining a foothold and taking the quail's place. This experiment was tried with Hungarian partridges and Mongolian pheasants and it has proven a great success Now thousands of acres of land in Indiana are in game preserves organized by farmers who agreed to keep their lands closed for the required length of time. The quail are multi plying pgain and more than that, the new iirported birds are gaining a place that will soon cause them to spread throughout the state. The success of the experiment has caused numerous people to ask for shipments of the birds and Commissioner Sweney has been granting these requests where he could but he has had to draw the line, because his importers tell him that they will be unable to furnish any more birds this spring.

STANDING OF THE TEAMS
IN THE SECONDARY DIVISION OF THE STATE AT PRESENT TIME SHOWS THAT EARLHAM IS THE LEADER. ' Beat Rose Poly" are the worda, which are on every student's Hps at Earlhsm, and nothing will satisfy them until "Heie" Clark's bunch of "net. tossere" have again received the small end of the score in the game with ttw Quaker quintet, which will be plaed next Friday evening on the Coliseum floor. The victories of the Karlhani five during the past two weeks, over both Wabash and Rose Poly, hae shot the Quaker's basket ball standing up to a very high degree among the other colleges of the state, and if they cau succeed in slipping a second victory over Rose Poly, they will have the best claim to the secondary. state championship. Although the Quakers have lost to both DePauw and Franklin, this does not effect her standing and claim. Frankl'n has lost to Miami twice, once to Wabash and twice to Hanover. Earlham has won from all three of these teams, which shows that she has by far the best team in comparison with Franklin. DePauw lost tp Butler last Saturday night. 2? to 21. and because of the fact that this is the only gam that Butler has won. it lowers DePauw's standing considerably among the otrer colleges. The teams standing and percentages up to the present time, follows: Teams. Won. Lost. FCt. Earlham . .:: - . Wabash 4 .."ill DePauw 4 .! Joll Rose Poly 2 '- - Franklin 1 :s JX Butler .. ....I 4 These games are .those that nave been played among the secondary colleges. Hanover is aot taken into account, because she has not played Depauw. Wabash, or Rose Poly, and has lost to Earlham. As to the fact that both Notre Dame and Michigan Aggie have been beaten by Wabash and Rose succeeded in beating Indiana last Saturday right by a score of 24 to 21, puts the Quakers up among the top notchers in the state. . The Quaker squad started Its last week cf training and practice yesterday afternoon. Shooting goals will b the main part of the practice this week, and bv not -having hard practice. It will enable the squad to be in the best possible condition to meet "Rose' Friday night.
