MANY PHYSICIANS GET THIS QUERY
"How Long Before One Exposed to Contagion, Be- . comes III?" Asked.
A LIGHT ON THE SUBJECT
IN SCARLET FEVER IT IS USUALLY FROM ONE TO SEVEN DAYS IT TAKES LONGER FOR DREAD SMALLPOX.
"How long does It take before one becomes ill after being exposed to a contagious disease?" This question, probably more than any other, is propounded to the physi
cians of the city dozens of times each day. Especially during the present season, when there is great danger of epidemics from various diseases, the ignorance of many in regard to tno length of time necessary to contract a contagion after being exposed, prompts the throwing of a little light on the
subject. In scarlet fever it is usually between
one and seven days after exposure, be
fore the patient is first taken sick. This does not imply that the rash be
comes noticeable at once, but that the
general symptoms, such as headache, fever and nauseating illness, make their appearance. The victims are most generally taken sick between the second and fourth days of the period of incubation. Chickenpox Indefinite. Chickenpox is more indefinite, taking from ten to fifteen days. Smallpox becomes evident in its early symptoms between the ninth and fifteenth day after exposure. The greatest number of cases appear on the twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth days. Some have been known to develop in eight days and a few are recorded as having incubated until the twentieth day. Typhoid fever shows itself between (he eighth and fourteenth day and some as late as the twenty-third day. Diphtheria, while it develops most often on the second or third day after exposure, may be delayed until the seventh. ' Whooping cough is confined to a limit of three days, from the seventh to the tenth. Mumps may develop in two to three weeks. In case of measles the period of incubation is from seve nto eighteen days appearing oftenest on the fourteenth day.
titution. Her name is known, but is withheld, as to mention it might embarrass others who bear the same family name, and it might further increase her own sense of shame to realize that she has been associating with such a man. It is now certain that her location will be ascertained by the police department within a few hours. One of Piper's last acts, before being arrested, was to give the woman two hundred dollars, and he stated that, with the money he hoped to realize on further fraudulent transactions, they expected to take up their residence in a remote part of this country, or in some foreign land. Piper repeatedly spoke of his infatuation for this v.onian and the only reference ha made to his own family was the selfishly expressed hope that they would get a lawyer for him."
THE PURE FOOD AND DRUG LAW has not only brought the foods and drugs of this country up to a higher standard of purity, but it has eliminated the harmful medicines with w hich this country was flooded. Such medicines, however, as Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound, purely a roots and herbs product, will continue its beneficial work among women.

already been placed against him, and where sentences will be pronounced in accordance with the crimes committed. He may even be sent back to Connecticut, whence we brought him, for there he was caught red-handed, trying to pass a fraudulent check, and his own attorney states there was no question about the crime, the minimum sentence for which, ir. that state is ten years. I am absolutely determined that Piper shall not escape just punishment for the wrongs he has done these good people over the country and if I, myself, should become a "senile dement," the work will be assumed by others. New Facts Develop. "New facts, sensational in character, are developing daily. It is now learned that Piper met the woman in the case in a house of ill repute In Cleveland, on the 7th day of last July, where she was following a life of pros-

HERE'S HARD ONE FOR T. MARSHALL
Can Five Live as Cheaply as Two, a Query of a Laporte Man.
TRIPLETS HAVE ARRIVED
IN HIS FAMILY AND THEY REPRESENT AN IMPORTANT FINANCIAL QUESTION, WHICH IS A DEEP ONE FOR HIM.
(Palladium Special) Indianapolis, Ind., Feb. 4. Govciaor Marshall has had a serious question put up to him by a man at Laporte. The governor is in Arizona just now and will not be home for a couple of weeks, but when he gets back he will find the question awaiting him. The Laporte man wants to know how five can live as cheap as two. The letter which he wrote to the governor eays that a few days ago his wife presented him with triplets three as fine
J 5oys as ever saw daj light. The fathI r says ho is happy over the multiple
vent and thiuks as much of the three boys as any father ever thought of a child. But he says he Is employed in one of the Laporte factories at $1.75 a uay, and what he wants the governor to tell him is, how he is going to keep a family of five on that much monev. If the governor is unable to answer his question he is asked to tell tLe father how he can make more moneyenough to keep the family. Mark Is a Bachelor. The writer of the letter appears to be in earnest. There is nothing flippant or funny in his letter. He asks straight questions and evidently wishes straight answers. Col. Mark Thistlethwaite , private secretary to Governor Marshall, and who is the governor while the real governor is away, is a bachelor, and for that reason he admits that he is not capable of giving the anxious father any advice on the subject, although it is said that he has pondered deep'.y over the subject since the letter arrived. He says the only remedy he cnn offer the man is to advise him to sea to it that his three boys vote the democratic ticket when they grow up.

Claiming that the expense in wrapping bread would be excessive and not material in the promotion of better sanitary conditions, the bakers of the city are of the opinion that there will be no change in the present system of handling this product, although a resolution has been passed by the Civic Federation of Women's clubs to this effect. The experiment has been tried in a number of cities, according to the bakers, and in each instance, it has been discontinued or the price of the product raised. The price of the ingredients composing a loaf of bread, is very high at the present and almost prohibitive of adding any additional cost, such as would be entailed iu wrapping the bread with oiled paper. Resolution of Clubs. The resolution adopted by the federated clubs is as follows: "Whereas, The present system of handling bread is unsanitary since the loaves must be frequently bandied and are subject to many uncleanly condi
tions, and whereas, the expense of
wrapping each loaf in oiled paper
would be slight and would insure a
more wholesome loaf, be it Resolved, First, that we, the members of the City Federation of clubs do heartily encourage and urge the bakeis
of Richmond to wrap each loaf of bread in the bakery before distributing it; and second, that we send a
copy of these resolutions to each baker
of our city.

A Rough Criticism. Lord. Houghton's epigram on "Sordello," probably the most obscure of Browning's poema, though it has often gone the rounds, is worth recalling. Said Lord Houghton, then only Dicky Milnes, "There are but two lines in 'Sordello' 1 can understand the first and last 'Who will may hear Sordello's story told' and 'Who Would hath heard Sordello's story told,' and both are false." ,

Miss E. R. A lotion that will help your red hands, dark face and neck permanently can be made by dissolving four ounces of spurmax in one-half pint of hot water and adding two teaspoonfuls of glycerine. This lotion will whitan and beautify your skin and take away that coarse, muddy look you have. This is much better than face powder, as it does not show on the skin and will not rub off easily, like the powder does when you wear a veil. Spurmax lotion is inexpensive and will give any sallow, oily skin a pinkish, youthful, appearance. It is fine for cold sores, tan. freckles and as a protection to the face against cold winds. I am sure- you will like spurmax lotion very much.
Muriel: The hairdressers in Paris, who gave you those "perfectly delightful shampoos," prepare the shampoo by dissolving a teaspoonful of canthrox in a cup of hot water. As you say, this shampoo lathers abundantly, cleans the scalp thoroughly, stops all irritation, and leaves a feeling of pleasing freshness. It also dries quickly and makes the hair soft and glossy. Soap should never be used to shampoo with, as it makes the hair streaky, harsh and brittle, and the alkali in soap tends to kill the hair. Canthrox can be bought at any drug store and when prepared at home is decidedly inexpensive. It makes the finest shampoo I ever usrd and is now being used generally by the best class of hair dressers in this country.
and adding two teaspoonfuls of glycerine. After stirring briskly, allow to stand an hour or so. You can get glycerine and almozoin at any drug store. This cream contains no oils or fats and will disappear completely when rubbed gently on the skin. Use this for massaging to prevent wrinkles and remove blackheads. A harsh and dry skin becomes smooth, moist and youthful with regular applications. It will make large pores smaller and is splendid to use on rough, chapped hands and face during the cold weather. There is nothing better than this complexion jelly for cleansing the skin from oil and dirt which soap and water will not remove.
Mrs. R. K.: The desire to be comely and graceful is a natural one, and your husband should not make fun of your exercise to reduce your weight. However, exercise alone, will not cut down your weight very much. Why dou:t you try the flesh reducing formula I have published several times? I have received many letters telling me how good this recipe is. Dissolve four ounces of parnotis in a pint of hot water and take a tablespoonful before each meal. This makes a harmless remedy, and if you will continue its use for a few weeks you will be gratified with the results, I know. You can get parnotis or anything else I recommend at all drug stores.
Mrs. A. L. T.: There would be fewer divorces if all wives were as careful of their good looks as are most girls before marriage. You will never improve your complexion as long as you continue plastering your face nightly with that greasy cold cream. A good cold cream is just what you need, but be sure it contains no oils or fats to promote a growth of hair. You can make an excellent complexion cream jelly yourself by dissolving one ounce of almozoin in one-half pint cold water
College Girl: You say your scalp is full of dandruff and that your hair appears lifeless and is coming out by the handful. This is caused by a germ and only prompt and proper treatment will save your hair. You can do this by using twice a week a tonic made by dissolving one ounce of quinzoin in one-half pint alcohol, then addingbnehalf pint cold water. Rub this tonic gently into the scalp and roots of the hair. This treatment will kill the germs, prevent dandruff and falling hair. This quinine tonic is very invigorating and nourishing, and you will find it will restore your hair and scalp to a healthy condition. It will make your hair soft and glossy, proving very refreshing to the scalp. Mabel M.: I am satisfied you would not need to wear glasses if you would treat your eyes with a good, reliable eye tonic. Get an ounce of crystos, from your druggist and dissolv it in a pint of water, dropping one or two drops into each eye daily. This tonic, is wonderfully strengthening to dull, tired, inflamed or weak eyes, and will not smart or burn. It will make your eyes bright and sparkling, and I also find it splendid for granulated eyelids.
Cashier; If you think your position may be given to another girl simply because her appearance is more attractive than yours, you should not waste time worrying, but give your attention at once to improving your looks. A sallow compexion with pimples and blotches, usually Is the result of poor digestion and blood out of order. External cosmetics may temporarily cover up the blemishes, but it is better to remove the cause. Try this: Dissolv-one-half teacupful of sugar and one ounce of kardene in a half pint of al-
Icohol and add enough boiling water
to make a full quart of tonic. Take a tablespoonful before each meal and at bed time. This good old-fashion
tonic aids digestion, purifies the blood arouses a torpid liver and tones up the whole system.
