ANNUAL ELECTION HELD ON MONDAY New Directors of the Commercial Club Will Then Be Voted For. CANDIDATES QUITE BUSY
THERE ARE TWO TICKETS IN THE FIELD, THE REDS AND THE BLUES, THE FORMER BEING OLD OFFICIALS.
Commercial Club's annual election takes place next Monday evening, and the candidates are busy buttonholing members for votes. There are two tickets in the field, known as the Reds and the Blues. The Reds are practically all old members of the board up for re-election. The election is held tinder the Australian system, and polls arc open from seven until nine o'clock in the evening. The only difference is made in the requirements of the Republican election hoard is that instead of the candidates treating, the board passes out a red apple, a cigar and a smile with each vote. The judges of the election are John I... Rune, I. N. Drurey and J. M. Coe. The rlerks are Kverett R. Iemon and lAiroy K. Brown. Any member of the Club can vote between the hours of 7 and 9 in the evening. The candidates of the Reds are R W. Craighead, Howard A. Dill, E. M. Haas, Sharon K. Jones, G. H. Knollenberg, J. F. McCarthy, Nettleton Xeff and S. K. Swayne. The candidates for the Blues are V. K. Bradbury, A. W. Blickwedel, C. C. Commons, K. G. Hill, H. C. Hasemeier, J. F. McCarthy, D. L. Mather and F. I. Reed. The eight men receiving the highest number of votes will be declared elected to serve on the Board of Directors for two years, from the first day of March. There are fifteen members of the board, seven holding over. The hold overs are A. H. Bartel, Henry Gennett, A. L. Jenkins, W. H. Quigg, Geo. E. Seidel, Geo. R. Dilks, and Walter H. Bates. These, together v,ith the newly elected members, will organize the new Board at the regular meeting in March. The Club being an Incorporated body, the Board of Directors elects the officers of the Club. The officers are president, first and second vice presidents, and secretary and treasurer. The officers may be chosen from the membership of the Club and the president and two vice presidents, if not already members of the Board, will become ex-of-ficio members by virtue of their office.

Telegraphing With Cannons. When the Orst vessel completed the passage of the then new Erie canal in 1S25. there being no such thing as a telegraph in those days, the news was communicated to New York and to Buffalo by cannons placed within hearing of each other all the way along from Albany to each of the other cities. The signal was passed along iu this way from. Albany to New York city and back again to Albany in fiftyeight minutes. The experiment was a costly one, but was a success In every particular.

At Local Theaters
At the Murray. Abundant comedy, plenty of music, good singing and plenty of dancing makes the bill at the Murray theater a strong one this week. The headliner 10 Dark Knights introduce a number of vocal and instrumental selections which are well received by the audience. The Musical Chink Billy Ray plays several different Instruments. Si and His Mule Maud is certainly a laugh provoker. Si is cer
tainly a true reproduction of the illustration as seen in the comic supplement. Print George & Co., presented an absurdity that ends in a scream. The motion pictures too present some good comedy. So to drive away the blues visit the Murray theater this week. The Gay Morning Glories. The Gay Morning Glories enjoys the distinction of playing more return engagements than any attraction en tour. This year the company is much larger and better than ever. The twenty-five chorus girls are selected from what is known as the prettiest girls on Broadway. The many song hits introduced all tend to delight the audtence. It is known that the costuming is superb. At the Phillips theater February loth. "Fluffy Ruffles." One of the merriest musical comedies ever sent out upon the road will be seen at the Gennett theater on Thursday, February 17th, when "Fluffy Ruffles" is presented with Florence Gear in the title role. "Fluffy Ruffles" could win recognition as a comedy alone. The addition of clever lyrics and tuneful music makes a combination that undoubtedly insures its being a favorite with theatergoers for several seasons to come. With her unrivaled mastery of style, Iter glorious voice and her irresistible charm of face and figure, Miss Gear makes "Fluffy Ruffles" an exact fulfillment of what the author and his associates must have had in their mind's eye when they collaborated in the work. A large company of carefully chosen principals and chorus support Miss Gear. "Gentleman From Mississippi." Wm. A. Brady and Joseph R. Grismer are making a fortune rapidly with "A Gentleman from Mississippi," which will be seen here on Wednesday, Feb. l(th at the Gennett. It is a screamingly funny comedy of life in Washington and is splendidly played. The great Chicago cast, which presented the piece for more than six months in that city, will be seen in the play here. Burr Mcintosh gives a rugged and unctious performance of
the jovial senator who finds himself
suddenly transplanted from his cotton fields to the national capital and Will Deming is said to be a champion laugh
"maker as the breezzy young newspaper
correspondent who pilots the new senator through the reefs and rocks of po
lineal intrigue. There are many pretty women who wear pretty gowns
and can act just as well as they look. Ethel May. , Everyone in town is talking of Ethel May, the Mystery Girl, who is appearing to crowded houses at the Gennett theater this week. Her wonderful
ability to answer questions is more startling than one can imagine without being present to hear her rapid fire replies. Tonight the Allen Stock Co. will play St. Elmo and tomorrow their feature play of Salome. Tomorrow afternoon, after the regular performance, all the men in the house, actors, stage hands and all, will be excluded
and then Miss May will answer any question asked her which women might not care to ask if there were any men present. Saturday afternoon, Lancolnt birthday, there will be a baby contest. '

WiLL DEBATE AGAIN
Earlham Team Has Arranged a Vocal Battle with Cincinnati University.
TALK ON LABOR QUESTION The Earlham college debating team, composed of Chester Haworth, V. D. Nicholson and Homer Morris, with Bernhardt Knollenberg as alternate, has arranged for a debate with the Cincinnati University team, to be hold on Friday evening, March 11. The question that will be decided on that evening will be, "Resolved, that the laboring classes could further their interests by organizing a separate labor party." Earlham will take the negative. In view of Earlham's debate with Albion College just one week later on the same subject, it is believed the local debaters will receive much valuable information on the subject and obtain a better insight as to how the Albion lads will defend the affirmative side of the point of contention.

When Lives Were Cheap. In the prison of Luxembourg one ot Fouquier Tinville"s agents could make up only seventeen convicts out of the list of eighteen which had been given him. "I want one more," he said. lie asked the first suspect who passed by his name and on hearing it said, "Yes; it is you." He had him carried off, and the next day he was guillotined. On another occasion a warder called out the name of an aged prisoner. A lad who was playing ball in the gallery mistook the uame for his own and asked If he was wanted. "Yes," was the answer; "come along," and the next day the boy was guillotined instead of the man. At Bordeaux a boy of sixteen named Mellet was guillotined instead of an old man of eighty namel Bellay. On objecting he was told that he was eighty years old in wickedness.

NO DYSPEPSIA, HEARTBURN, GAS
OR OTHER STOMACH DISTRESS.
Early Icehouses. In America Icehouses have been known for at least 200 years. They were first very primitive affairs, being nothing more than deep cellars, the flooring made of boards or stone, upon which was placed a layer of straw or sawdust. The sides were lined with boards set about a foot from the wall, and this space was filled in with sawdust, tan bark or straw. A rough thatched roof completed the structure, which was then filled with ice, between the layers of which tan bark or sawdust was strewed.
