CANDIDATES It came to light today that on account of a statute enacted by the legislature in 19T)8, which requires that a county assessor must be a resident freeholder of a county for a period of four years before he can assume office, will. It was announced today, eliminate Frank Swain of this city and probably eliminate William Mathews of Centerville, from the race for the republican nomination for that office. Albert Oler. the third candidate in the race for the office, it was stated this afternoon, fulfils the requirement of the law. Mr. Oler owns property in Greene township. At the auditor's office it was ascertained that one Martha Jane Mathews, deceased, was formerly a property owner in Centerville. If she was the wife of the candidate and he has inherited her property, he would, it is thought, not be barred from holding office in the event of nomination and election. The county central committee will hold a meeting Friday night and will take action on this peculiar event, arising at the eleventh hour, after Mr. Swain and Mr. Mathews have been making a hard canvass. A SPLENDID RECORD Unprecedented in the history of the local post office is the gain in business for the past month over the corresponding period of 1909. The gain amonnted to $1,190.08. January was the tenth month of the fiscal postal year 1909-10 and all indications point to the year being the biggest ever experienced by the local office. It would not surprise postal officials if the year's total receipts were more than $80,000. The January sales amounted to $7,690.39, of which a surplus of $3,103.53 was sent to Indianapolis.
