PLAY HANOVER TONIGHT Franklin basket ball team defeated the Earlham quintet last night by a score of G4 to 11. The game was the fastest and most spectacular ever seen on the Franklin floor. The game was hard fought from' the start to finish. The Quakers were unable to hit the basket with their usual form, many of the shots being wasted, while many of the goals of the visitors were made on long throws. Franklin's guards put up an excellent defensive work, while Brown was easily the star for the Baptists. The Earlham squad was weakened by the absence of Capt. Conrad, as he is being saved for the game tonight with Hanover. Tebbets was again in his usual form in throwing foul goals, getting seven. Reagan and Hughes were also stars for the Quakers. The team will play Hanover college this evening and although worn out ty the trip and game with Franklin, they will fight every inch of ground and try to split even on the trip. Freshmen Winners. Earlham freshman basket ball team won from the Milton high school last night on Milton's home floor, in a rough and scrappy game, the final score being 20 to f. Captain Stanley and Evans were the stars for the freshmen, Evans getting sis field goals. A large crowd of Earlham' students accompanied the team. TEN PER CENT RAISE. Irwin, Pa., Jan. 29. The mine workers of the Keystone Coal and Coke Company of Baltimore, employed in the Irwin district, have received an increase of ten per cent., effective February 1. Four thousand men are afected.

MAY CONTEST MARRIAGE LAD'S MOTHER SAYS HE IS ONLY 19 YEARS OLD AND THAT SHE HAD NEVER HEARD OF THE GIRL HE WEDDED. Tearfully pleading for leniency in behalf of her wayward son and choking back the sobs winch swelled her. ; throat until she could scarcely speak. ' Mrs. Charles Muller, of Cincinnati, j mother of the young forger. Christian I Muller, whose sensational escapade jwith his pretty nineteen-year-old wife j has been the occasion of so much coniI ment in this city during the past few days appeared before Judge Fox this afternoon and earnestly asked that her boy be given another chance. Mrs. Mutters' daughter. Miss Matilda Muller, was also present and aided her mother in an effort to secure her brother's release. Mrs. Muller was almost prostrated with grief over the unfortunate affair. She stated that her son had never i been in trouble before and did not realj ize what a seriovs offense he had com- , mitted. She declared th at he was but j nineteen years old nnd his youth she ; said accounted for his actions during the past two weeks. Didn't Know the Bride. The boy's mother said that she had j never heard of Miss Marie Zottleder land did not even know he had been j attentive to her. She said that she knew absolutely nothing concerning the girl"s family. She was amazed to think that her sen would get married without letting her know of the matter and declared that he had never deceived her before. Young Muller was visited at the county jail by his mother and sister during the greater part of the morning and for the first time since his arrest seem to feel the pangs of remorse. He admitted that he had done wrong and committed an act for which he could be sent to prison, but says he did not appreciate its seriousness and it appears to him now as a dream. He still remains true to his girl wife, however, although it is understood his mother will contest the marriage cf her son on the ground that the marriage license was invalid, in view of the ! fact that the young man gave his age to the county clerk as 26 when his real age is but 19. The boy declares that he will not leave ti5 wife, despite the alleged objections of his mother. Ladd Is Petitioned. Prosecuting Attorney Ladd filed two charges against Muller in the circuit court this morning. One charging him with being a forger and the other charging him with attempting to pass a forged check. Prosecuting Attorney Ladd was also the recipient of many appeals from the mother and

It was suggested to the woman that she secure the names of influential business men at Cincinnati for whom Muller is alleged to have worked, and get them to intercede in his behalf. Judge Fox stated that he did not know what he would do in regard to the matter, but would carefully consider it. It is the opinion of several of the attorneys that the boy will be given another chance after a severe reprimand. Joseph Zimmerman of Cincinnati, arrived yesterday appearing for Attorney Muller. the boy s uncle, and paid the board bill of the two at the Westcott. He also paid Mr. Gay the $l." which Muller had secured from the clerk to get married on. According to Attorney Muller, young Muller dors not bear the excellen reputation his mother says he does. Ho says that the young man has been in trouble at Cincinnati. The matter will be investigated hefore he is released. Mrs. Christian Muller. the girl wife of the young forger received a letter from her parents last evening, but refuses to divulge the nature of its contents. She stated however that her parents desired her to return home but that she wouldnt' leave Christian. TO THE FIGHT FANS Jeffries Says He Don't Care Where He Fights "With the Nigger. ALSO CALLS HIM A SKUNK (American News Service) Portland. Ore., Jan. 20. "It is none of my business where the fight takes place." said Jim J. Jeffries last night. "I have 1:0 more to do with the scene of the light with the 'nigger' than I have with the routine of this show." Jeffries used the term "nigger" not lightly, but as an expression of designed contempt. " I am under contract to meet Jack Johnson under the auspices of Tex Rickard and Jack Gleason, and where they decree to pull off the fight is where I will meet the "skunk." I've got nothing to do with the place. "My preferences are my own, but they won't have anything to do with the decision of those who offered the highest bid. Tex Rickard and Jack Gleason will settle the question themselves." A CHICAGO STRIKE (American News Service) Chicago, Jan. 2D.
