A SURRENDER WOULD END THE SUIT. Last year the government began suit to put an end to the intimate and unlawful relations of the Harriman lines. The Union and Southern Pacific, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe, and Oregan Short Line were . among the roads mentioned in the complaint. Some testimony has been taken, but It will be a long time before final action can be had, no matter how vigorously the suit may be pushed. The president of the Harriman lines and his lawyers are in Washington conferring with President Taft and the attorney general about this suit. They wish to settle it amicably, but the terms which they have proposed are not known. If they were such as the government could accept it would no doubt be glad to dismiss the suit. Then It could get rid of one bit of dragging litigation and take up something else. "Unconditional surrender," by the roads which have been sued would end the controversy. If they were to come down like Capt. Scott's coon, the department of justice would not
fire at them. And why should not
they do this instead of going on with a losing fight? They see what a hard time other great law-breakers are having In the courts. They see that the
legislation nor,' on the statute books
is to be mr.de even stronger. There is no abatement of popular hostility to the practical merger of railroads
which should be competitors. It
would be a triumph of wisdom for the Harriman roads to seek safety by submission. Chicago Tribune.

. INDIANA 'S SONS. There Is more truth than poetry in what was said abcut the litorary standing of Indiana. In fact, when a Hoosier rises to explain a few facts as to the achievements of his fellow Hooslers there is a look of absolute surprise On the face of the cultured East. Such celebrities as Dr. Schleiman, John Muir, Henry Ward Beecher, Maurice Thompson, David Starr Jordan, Howard Griggs, General Lew Wallace George Barr McCutcheon, Booth Tarkington. James Whitcomb Riley, Oliver P. Morton, Vice President Colfax, Thomas A. Hendricks and Abraham Lincoln arc a few of the illustrious persons who were either native-born or spent the time of preparation for greatness in Indiana. New York Times.
